Lives, Together

hese three gentlemen, along with others, have the unique privilege

of working close to home—in fact, right at home—amongst friends, in their own retirement community.

Prior to restrictions prompted by the Coronavirus, Daniel, Rodney

and Hershey all worked in providing regular transportation at Landis Homes, such as taking residents to appointments, venturing to the grocery store, or shuttling them to day trip destinations. But when those outings were canceled due to the virus, Landis Homes found new ways to keep these transportation workers busy.

While the campus was closed to visitors and the Stay at Home order was in place, Daniel, who started driving for Landis Homes in 2013, made deliveries to residents. On an average day, he had about forty deliveries, primarily groceries or big bouquets of flowers. “I liked the give-and-take with people, to meet at the door and see their smile,” he said. “I got to see residents that I wouldn’t otherwise see.”

Rodney, who moved to Landis Homes five years ago, began helping with transportation because he had experience as a school bus driver. He also made deliveries to those on campus who were sheltering in place. He appreciated the connection he was able to establish. “For some people, I was the only contact they had for the most part,” Rodney said. “I felt like I was starting to bond with them.”

Hershey took residents one-on-one to medical appointments, but a typical day also consisted of making deliveries around the campus. He viewed this opportunity as a time to encourage others. “I’m just glad I got to help relieve some of the loneliness people were feeling,” he said. “I feel like it was worth it.”

Working only minutes from home has been practical, especially during this time. “I like the convenience,” Hershey said. “But most of all, I like the chance to be with others.” Daniel agreed, saying, “We have enough of a community here that we don’t feel as lonesome as people who may be living in a house alone.”

Because they are residents and team members, Daniel, Rodney and Hershey have all experienced first-hand how much Landis Homes prioritizes the safety and health of all.

“It’s the best retirement community in the county,” said Rodney. “I feel privileged and blessed that I can also work here. It only reinforces that this is a fantastic place to live and work.”
