F PEACEFUL PACE: INDING A NEW HOME Meet Judy and Robert…
Judy (Ebersole) Martin moved to Landis Homes from “Te City that Never Sleeps.”
After growing up on a farm near Middletown, PA, and then spending much of her childhood in Brazil, Judy returned to the United States to call New York City home. She was still single at the time and was able to build a career serving in urban ministry and working for the City University of New York (CUNY). For 35 years, she thrived in the hustle and bustle of the borough of Queens, with its innumerable shops, theatres and restaurants. “I went to Broadway, I went out to eat,” she said. “It never sleeps! It’s so multi-cultural and I grew as a person. It was a wonderful experience.”
Seven years ago, at the age of 64, Judy married her husband, Robert, in New Holland. Within a few years, they were ready to embrace retirement. Tey decided to leave New York City and move to quiet and picturesque Lancaster County— specifically Landis Homes.
“I love the country and the quietness,” said Judy. “It’s slower paced. You can take the time to smell the flowers.”
Now, rather than hearing the din of sirens and the babble of crowds outside of their bedroom windows, Judy and Robert hear the gentle clip-clop of passing horses and buggies. After so many years living in the hubbub of NYC, Judy has adapted to this new slower pace and peaceful setting.
However, despite moving away from the excitement of the city, Robert and Judy have found ways to keep active and spend quality time together. Tanks to the opportunities provided by Landis Homes, they have enjoyed attending classes together, going to concerts, using the fitness center, visiting the Owl Hill Bistro and taking day retreats.
It may not be New York City, but it’s become the perfect place for Robert and Judy to build a community and rest in the scenic, quiet landscape around them.
“Te staff is very caring,” said Judy. “I’m happy here, it’s amazing. We thank God we’re here, especially with all the challenges of COVID-19. We are extremely thankful.”
