CULTIVATING WELLNESS
Kathy Ziegler-Pham has never been afraid of new things.
“I never went to college until I was 30,” Kathy said. That was when she chose to study computer science at Penn State York. But her interest in computers started years earlier, when she took a computer science class in high school, the very first time it was offered.
“It was all done on paper because there weren’t any computers,” she said. T
hat early interest eventually became a career. Kathy worked in information technology, setting up personal
computers (PCs) and doing programming, before working for Honeywell and the state. At the time, many offices were moving from mainframe terminals to PCs, and Kathy already had hands-on PC experience. Her knowledge, and the fact that she was the only woman in her department, helped set her apart in a field that was changing quickly.
Years later, Kathy found herself needing support at home. In August 2024, she was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Te diagnosis came as a surprise, although thankfully it was found early. Kathy had two-thirds of her stomach removed and contacted the Office of Aging to learn more about in-home help.
After her surgery, she was first referred to another agency, but for several months that agency was unable to find someone who fit her schedule. Ten Kathy learned that Landis at Home had an opening. “You should be so grateful because Landis at Home has the best reviews,” she was told by the Office of Aging.
Kathy expected the process to take much longer, but Landis at Home quickly found several team members who could help. Soon she was connected with regular support. “Nicole is really good at cleaning and organizing,” Kathy said. “She helps me put things in places where they’re very available to me, and organizes them in ways that make sense so I can get through my day a little easier.”

“I’ve been very impressed with everyone they send,” she continues. “Not only are they good at their job and the things that they do, everyone has been such a nice person. It feels like they really care about the job and the people they’re helping. I don’t feel like I can ask for more!”
Te support Kathy receives at home helps make everyday life a little easier, giving her more room to enjoy the things that have always made her feel like herself, including her longtime love of technology. For Kathy, that love of technology has continued in a fun and unexpected way: video games.
Kathy started gaming in 2003 after her son came to visit and brought one of his gaming systems. “I was just watching him play, and I said it looked like fun,” she said. Before long, she had made a character on his account. After he left, she bought her own system and game. Since then, Kathy has played many games, her favorites being a Disney quest game and Diablo 4. “I’m not as good as I used to be,” Kathy said with a laugh, “but I’m pretty okay!”
Trough technology, caregiving, health challenges, and new routines, Kathy continues to adapt, connect, and find joy in the everyday. With support from Landis at Home, she can keep doing that in the place she knows best: home.
