Finding joy in competition and connecting with others was very evident in the 2026 Lancaster Senior Games, where hundreds of people aged 55 plus from across the county gathered to celebrate strength, perseverance, and the gift of staying active.

Lives, Together

he Lancaster Senior Games are rooted in a simple belief that wellness is not something we should age out of. Te Games invite participants to move, try something new, and cheer one another on. Whether someone arrives as a seasoned athlete or a first time participant, the emphasis is always on personal wellness and many enjoyable connections.

Tat philosophy resonates deeply with the Landis Communities holistic approach to wellness, which honors physical vitality alongside emotional, social, and spiritual well-being. Participation in the Senior Games feels like a natural extension of daily life across the organization, where all aspects of wellness are woven into community living.

This year more than 30 residents from Landis Homes, Landis Place on King, and Steeple View Lofts participated.

For Ellen Berfond (right), a resident of Landis Place on King, the experience captured exactly why staying active matters so much to her. “Staying physically active has always been one of my goals,” Ellen shared. “Working out alongside others provides me with motivation, self awareness, and social connection, all important factors in healthy aging. Joining Senior Games is really inspiring to see other older adults ranging in ages from 55 to 90 plus still active and strong. I am able to challenge myself and maybe even inspire others.”

Landis Homes resident, James Martin, says, “I have a personal goal to be very active and physically engaged in life as long as my health allows. Te Senior Games give me an added incentive and focus to do physical fitness training. Several years ago I transitioned from running and jogging to fast walking, and have enjoyed training and participating the last three years. Te Games also provide opportunities to meet new people and renew friendships.”

Barb Breneman, who lives at Steeple View Lofts, and who medaled in the horseshoe competition, notes, “I have participated since I retired 10 years ago. I just do it for fun and over the years have gotten to know regular participants. It’s a great social event, where you can also try lots of different events.”

Te Games, which began in 1989, have grown into a Lancaster County tradition. Tey are sponsored by the Lancaster County Office of Aging and supported by many businesses and organizations. Over the decades, the Games have evolved to reflect the changing interests and abilities of older adults, but always keeping the ideals present from the beginning. Today, the Lancaster Senior Games continue to bring together participants from across the county, all who are striving for personal bests, and maybe the chance to bring home a medal or two.
