Recovery from the Covid pandemic will remain dif.cult and with the further labour and material supply issues that Brexit brings, it could take at least 2 years for the sectors to fully recover.

As a trade body NADC has had no contact from members to the effect that Brexit has affected them either positively or negatively, and that includes supplier members.


Covid has impacted NADC members in different ways. There has been inconsistent demand for contractor services across the country with some members reporting that they have been as busy as ever, and others saying they had been very quiet, particularly during the lockdown periods. It was important in the first instance that drainage contractors


were recognised as essential workers and NADC got early clarity from Government on this point. Covid impacted on the construction sector in particular during the lockdown periods which had a knock-on effect on the industry. In recent months members have indicated that demand levels have increased significantly and that they are all extremely busy.


The biggest reported impact on members in respect of the new residency rules has been a shortage of drivers, in particular for tankers. Some members are reporting vehicles standing idle against a backdrop of demand for their


services being very strong. This is of course part of a much wider issue in respect of shortages of truck drivers across the UK.


Overall NADC believes that the industry has performed well over the past 18 months. There have been a few contractors who have gone out of business, but there is no evidence that this is in higher numbers than normal. Complaints from customers to NADC have not shown any increase over the past 18 months.


Perhaps the most enduring change that will happen in coming months and years will be the establishment of DrainSafe the approved contractor scheme which will help to drive up standards and reward those who deliver the best service to customers. So called ‘cowboy’ operators will increasingly struggle to operate in the market place.


In addition to DrainSafe, NADC is developing other tools to help the industry such as the
