city.Sofiyska Voda provides drinking water to approximately 1.4 million people living in
Sofia.It’s the first company on the Balkans to invest in sustainable, digital water resource
management.The Iskar Reservoir is the biggest reservoir in Bulgaria and the main source of drinking water and hydroelectricity.
The water company operated by Veolia has just installed the MPC-Buoy technology manufactured by Dutch company LG Sonic with the aim of increasing the security of its drinking water supply, as it’s vulnerable to different types of pollution, including harmful algae blooms. These blooms can cause serious illnesses in humans, animals and fish. They also degrade water quality and cause foul taste and smell.
The MPC-Buoy stands for “Monitor, Predict, Control.” The buoy is anchored in the water body, monitoring water parameters in real- time and transferring these data to a web- based software. In case of pollution caused by algae blooms, the MPC-Buoy emits ultrasonic waves into the water to stop their growth. This technology is safe for the environment and people. chemical-free, and remotely operated by the LG Sonic team who has direct access to the real-time water characteristics.
Sofiyska Voda chose the MPC-Buoy for its real- time monitoring feature, as well as its early warning system integrated within patented Veolia Hubgrade digital control solution. The smart system has alarming functions when it detects changes in the water quality. The specialized software automatically creates a
forecast based on the data it receives. Thus, the MPC-Buoy offers an accurate picture of what’s happening in the water body, preventing the possible degradation of water quality.
The innovative MPC-Buoy technology has been successfully deployed and is already transmitting real-time information. A few hours after installation, the first data on turbidity, pH, temperature, Dissolved Oxygen, phycocyanin, and chlorophyll were displayed.

An innovative project to help the water utility sector engage directly with the public will be revealed at this week’s Water Action Platform webinar, which takes place on Thursday, 26 August.
With increasing scrutiny from regulators and the public for water utilities to reduce pollution incidents, invest in infrastructure and reach net zero carbon emissions by 2050, there has never been a more pressing need for the industry to communicate the challenges it is facing.
