Rachel Gribble, Salon System Educator says “It’s so important that you buy from legitimate professional product houses or wholesalers. The Internet is a haven for fake products, and there are so many these days that look completely genuine. Just because it looks like the product you want, doesn’t mean that it what is inside.”
Celia Rose, Dermalogica Sales Manager says “There are a few of ways to check whether the Dermalogica product purchased is the real deal. Firstly, does the outer packaging look as though it has been tampered with? Is the print on the packaging as you would expect and are the instructions written in the native language of the country the product was purchased in? If you are using a product which you have used before, does the product look, feel and smell correct?”
“Dermalogica only retail through qualified skin therapists” says Celia, “Therefore, the person or company you are purchasing product through should be knowledgeable about your skin”. Alarm bells should ring if the seller is unable to answer any questions or queries you have about the products.
If you are in any doubt about the authenticity of a product, Celia recommends that you contact the head office of the brand in question, with details of where the product was purchased and why you believe it might not be genuine.
Samantha Sweet, Co-Founder of Sweet Squared warns, “I have seen some very authentic looking CND™Shellac™ fakes so you must beware. There are a few things that give the fakes away. The smell – it’s over-powering, vile and smells nothing like true CND™Shellac™, the actual treatment doesn’t last and sometimes the product won’t remove at all.”
Samantha Sweet advises that the only way to really know you are buying a genuine beauty product is to ensure you are buying from an official distributor. Samantha says, “If you are unsure of whom the official distributors are then contact the brand directly, most brand websites have a ‘Locate my nearest distributor’ section.”
in your area that may be faking their qualifications and ruining the reputation of the whole industry.
Nilam Holmes-Patel, CEO and Co-Founder, High Definition says “High Definition have a dedicated Brand Protection Team who work hard to look into any possible untrained stylists, salons, retailers or training academies that may be offering the treatment, or using the High Definition name without proper training or accreditation (we know these as infringers).”
Infringers are operating illegally and are potentially taking custom away from your professional beauty business- often offering a substandard treatment. This also poses dangers to the client who may be exposed to fake products and procedures that aren’t tailored to the specific treatment and should anything go wrong, the therapist won’t be insured.
Show your clients that you are a true professional by attending a Guild Accredited Training Course. The benefits of Guild Accredited Training are that we will be able to offer you insurance to carry out the treatment you were taught, along with a certificate and CPD points, so that you can prove to your clients that you are suitably qualified.

If you believe someone is faking their beauty qualifications you must alert the official brand immediately. Nilam says “We ask all High Definition Brows Stylists to be our eyes and ears and to report anyone they suspect of offering the treatment when they are not qualified to do so. When we receive a report, we gather any important information from the reporter and take legal action against the suspected infringer.”
It is not just fake products that are a problem. You also need to keep an eye out for untrained stylists and salons
