M JANUARY

onzo has been a favourite of London millennials for quite some time now. For some inexplicable reason, banking is the new trend urbanite hipsters are into, so Monzo has rounded them

all up and made them believe that they’re all in this together. As a product, we think Monzo was great, and even to bring the community together is commendable. However, as a result of that, people get strangely obsessed with the bank.

We recently published a piece under the name of “Why is Monzo running into payment trouble?”. The content, if you were lucky enough to read it, was fairly harmless. There have been a few times when the neo-bank has been forced to temporarily discontinue its service due to technical issues with the payment processor. This, understandably, should raise questions and concern among users, investors, and people keeping an eye on these types of banks. But the overly-attached Monzo-user community is at a totally different level.

As it went live, we saw that some folks were more concerned about the fact that we were pointing out the issue rather than about the issue itself. When a minor typo was spotted on the website version of the story, a Twitter user tweeted at us: “HA! That was embarrassing...”. We were confused about their resentful reaction, but it soon became clear that they were a ‘founder investor’. A very emotional one, for that matter, who took the matter personally. It’s like the “Leave Britney Alone” video all over again, but about Monzo. It may be true that fans ruin all things good and this is why we can’t have nice things.
