ow! Tis year has gone by fast! I can’t believe I’m writing my last article as the board chair of the OSCPA.
Tey say if time goes by quickly, it’s a sure sign you’ve been very busy. Tat would definitely be the case for this year, given the amount of time spent preparing for the OSCPA’s Centennial Celebration, which culminates with the annual meeting on June 8. Te staff has done an outstanding job planning this event in addition to all of their other responsibilities. Tey deserve a big thank you for all of their extra effort. On both the national and state levels, tax
reform has been a major issue this year. While the federal tax legislation has passed, legislators at the state level are still wrestling with budget and tax issues. On that note, I want to also offer a huge thanks to Dr. Carlos Johnson, CPA, who makes sure legislators know the position the OSCPA takes on financing and regulation issues and makes sure legislators know they can call a CPA to obtain information on how certain tax changes might impact their constituents. In February, the OSCPA organized another successful CPA Day at the Capitol. Approximately thirty CPAs met with key legislators to discuss current state issues and then delivered Legislative Tax Guides (also available online at
www.oscpa.com, in Resources, Public Practice Resource Center). It has been a pleasure for me to travel around the state and visit with accounting students at the various universities. I’m always pleased at how interested they are in becoming active members of the profession. I’ve also attended several functions of the Young Accounting Professionals (YAP) and I’m very excited for the future of the OSCPA under their leadership.
I would be remiss if I didn’t take this
opportunity to thank each of you for allowing me the honor of serving as board chair this past year. You know you have had a fulfilling life when reality exceeds your childhood dreams. I’ve always been very proud of the fact I was a CPA and I hope that message permeated to everyone I met this year. Tank you to all the committee chairs, chapter presidents and board members. Your dedication and efficiency have made my year easy. Tank you to the staff for keeping me on task. You are the best. Last but not least I would like to thank Fred VanWeiren for taking the time many years ago to invite a very intimidated young woman to go with him to an OSCPA tax discussion group. It made a huge difference in my life!
Now, it’s your turn to make an impact. Invite someone to attend the OSCPA Centennial Celebration on June 8. We’ll hear from pop icon Ben Stein, as well as AICPA President and CEO Barry Melancon. Additionally, Dr. David Schultz, JD, a law and professional ethics expert will discuss why good people do bad things. Tat evening, we will celebrate award winners, commemorate our past and toast to the future! Tis is one party you don’t want to miss, so register today!
