FOCUS on educators
A
n East Central University professor earned the OSCPA’s top teaching award at the Oklahoma Accounting Educator’s
Conference in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on April 7. Julie Lee, CPA, an accounting professor at
ECU in Ada, Oklahoma, was named the 2018 Outstanding Accounting Educator. Lee received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from ECU and is currently working on a doctorate of Education at Oral Roberts University. However, she is not letting her pursuit slow her down. She is also a member of the Faculty Senate and the Library Committee at ECU, as well as serving on the Department and School of Business Accounting Scholarship and Accounting Curriculum Committees. A member for 16 years, Lee has also served on the OSCPA’s Liaisons with Educational Institutions (LEI) Committee. In his nomination letter, the dean of
Stonecipher School of Business at East Central University, Wendell Godwin said, “Julie is a high-character individual with a passion for accounting. She has been able to deliver extremely high results while being enrolled in
a doctoral program. I respect her work, her commitment to results and her support for our students. We are blessed to have her at ECU.” “I am thrilled to be recognized as the 2018
Outstanding Accounting Educator,” Lee said. “At the end of the day, my students make this all worth it.”
A student of this year’s honoree said,
“Students typically do very well in her classes, not because the classes are easier than others, but because we learn more from her. Her tests aren’t easy, but she prepares us.” Te award was presented by Janelle
Montgomery, CPA, a professor of accounting at Rose State College and chair of the LEI Committee. Winners are selected from applications of nominees and nominations are due in November. For more information about the Outstanding Accounting Educator award or other OSCPA awards, visit

T
ax season often makes you feel like you’re getting creamed at work, but for one member that feeling became reality.
Randy Murray, CPA, an accounting professor
at the Meinder’s School of Business at Oklahoma City University got pied in the face for a great cause.
Te Student Accounting Society (SAS) set out jars and prepared for a good, old-fashioned penny war where coins were positive points and bills were negative points. Te faculty or staff member with the most points would get pied in the face by a volunteer faculty member. Murray won in a landslide with 7,672 points.
His closest competitor was more than 1,000 points below him.

“I think it was amazing because he [Murray] was campaigning the whole time. He auctioned a big jar of coins that ended up in another professor’s jar,” said Ashley Mainus, president of the SAS and OSCPA student member. “Te first week, we didn’t have a lot of interaction from students, but I was impressed at how many professors put money in other jars.” Te situation wasn’t sticky for everyone — SAS raised almost $600. When he was asked about how he feels about being pied, Murray joked, “It’s an honor, but I understand how Trump feels now. I am tired of winning; I am going to lose for a while.”
