New maps for National Recreation Trails W

e have a lot of news on our efforts to make more trail information and maps available to the pub- lic. American Trails is the organization responsi- ble for supporting the National Recreation Trails (NRT) program. We manage the national database of over 1,200 congressionally designated trails. As the steward of this program, American Trails has developed, and is implementing, several new programs to strengthen and support this exciting program, celebrating 50 years of success, and building the foundation of growth and improvements for the next 50 years.

NRT Database update

American Trails has worked with our federal partners to gather key data on the designated NRTs, and to develop a searchable database and searchable map of all of the NRTs in the country. This effort has paid off in the creation of an effective new user interface that allows NRT users to find the best trail for their needs, upload new photos, update missing or incorrect trail data, and give personal reviews of each trail. Through this new phone and tablet optimized platform, we hope to engage volunteers across the country to help us make this resource a valuable tool for trail enthusiasts across the country. American Trails first brought the system of NRTs to the

internet more than a decade ago. Our latest version of the interface meets with today’s minimalist, responsive design and ensures that you can find one of America’s best trails whether you’re at your desktop computer, using a tablet, or on your mobile phone. Best of all, we put all the NRTs on a searchable map using the national standard ESRI plat- form. With just a click you can find NRTs near you, while on the go.

The new online national map puts (for the first time in 50 years) all 1,270 trails on the map. We’re working on adding centerlines (downloadable gpx files) to each trail. We’ve also made it possible for you to share your trail experience with the trail community by uploading photos and reviews of the NRTs you bike, hike, or ride. See the next page for more on ways that trail enthusiasts can get involved.
