Willanthropy — a savvy approach to making a lasting impact

Lucinda Frostick, director of Remember A Charity In recent years, Willanthropy has

become increasingly prevalent. In fact, these gifts now fund around half of the British Heart Founda- tion’s live-saving research and help sustain many of the nation’s hospices and other local charitable services. While charitable gifts in Wills

were once primarily associated with larger estates, it’s now more widely understood that you don’t need to be particularly wealthy to give in this way. Donations can be of any size and to any charity, fi tting around gifts for your loved ones. And supporters often speak of how empowered they feel after making the decision to include their favourite charities in their Will. Great Ormond Street Hospital

T e likes of William Shakespeare, Paul O’Grady and Betty Boothroyd all famously left charitable dona- tions in their Wills, but with tens of thousands of people across the UK now doing the same each year, it’s not just an option for those with fame and wealth. Why is this trend of ‘Willanthropy’ on the rise and what do you need to know to support good causes in your Will?

(GOSH) Charity supporter Michael has included a gift to the charity in his Will as a thank-you for the extraordinary treatment his daughter Hazel received at GOSH and the extra years of life it gave her. His hope is that his legacy will have an impact on the care that GOSH can provide for children in the future. What’s more, for those who want

to support good causes, remem- bering a charity in your Will can also be a savvy strategy for minimising inheritance tax. Charitable gifts in Wills are exempt from tax and, if you choose to donate 10% or more

of your net estate, this can reduce the tax rate on the estate from 40% to 36%.

How to leave a gift Donating from your Will is easier than you might think. Start by

considering the charitable causes that resonate closely with you or the charities that have touched your life. You might even wish to talk to the

charity about how your gift could help. And if you need support and advice, it’s always worth speaking to a solicitor or professional Will-writer.
