Men’s prostate health

Prostate problems are common as men get older, but changes in urinary symptoms shouldn’t simply be dismissed as part of ageing

Prostate cancer may cause no symptoms in its early stages, while benign prostate enlargement (BPH) can cause a weak stream, diffi culty starting, frequent or urgent urination and getting up repeatedly at night. T ese conditions can coexist, making proper assessment important. A urological assessment may

include a discussion of symptoms and

family history, examination,

urine testing and PSA blood testing, with MRI and other investigations considered when appropriate. For men troubled by BPH, treatments

range from lifestyle measures and medication to minimally invasive procedures and surgery. HoLEP, a modern laser technique, can provide eff ective removal of obstructing prostate tissue for suitable patients. Early advice can help men

understand how healthy their prostate is and, ultimately, choose the right investigation or treatment.

Mr Nkwam Michael Nkwam is a highly respected consultant urological surgeon who off ers expert prostate assessment and modern BPH treatment options.
