6 SEPTEMBER 2021 Choosing your kid’s doctor made easy

Finding a good doctor for your child is never easy. Paediatrician Michael Markiewicz talks about what he’d be looking for in a doctor for his own children

Because you rely on your paediatri- cian to make decisions that in the extreme can effect your child’s life, it’s vital to have full trust in his or her ability to tackle any medical problem that may arise. You should expect your doctor to have a vast breadth of experience, be knowledgeable and have an excellent track record. One of the best ways to ensure this is through word of mouth from other parents as well as professionals. As you’re likely to see your paedi-

atrician quite often, it’s essential that you can get on with him or her. And even more importantly is that the paediatrician gets on with your child. How would you know about that? Well one way is to meet up and another way is to listen to what the grapevine has to say.

Gut feeling Do you feel comfortable? It’s actually very important to feel happy with your choice. Would you recommend your paediatrician to other friends? If not, then you should be looking for another one. Unless, of course, you’re worried that your paediatrician will be so busy that he or she can’t see your child.

Medical issues What sort of doctor are you looking for? Are you conservative? Into alternative medicine, perhaps not so happy to vaccinate, prefer not to give medicines or antibiotics even

if recommended by your paediatri- cian? If this is the sort of doctor you want, then I definitely don’t fit that bill. I do strongly believe in preventa- tive medicine and I’m very pro vacci- nations, as I believe them to be the single most important medical advancement, that’s saved millions of lives. As regards safety versus risk, I’m a

firm believer in ‘if only’. I never want to have to say to my patient, “If only I’d done this.” I therefore factor this into the management of every child I treat. Having said that, it’s equally important to be able to decide when it’s not appropriate to treat and not to give unnecessary antibiotics or other drugs.

Insurance As you’re after a private paediatri- cian, it’s important you know how the insurance system in the UK works. If you have UK-based insur- ance, you’ll need a GP referral before you can access the paediatrician. It’s also important to ensure that the insurance covers your doctor’s fees. If you prefer the US model, where

you have open access to the paedia- trician, you’ll need to have a non-UK- based insurance that lets you bypass the GP. Of course, an alternative option is to be self-funding. And finally, good luck in choosing

and finding the right paediatrician for your child and in fact for the whole family.

Patient testimonials “Dr Markiewicz has been our family paediatrician for nine years now. Our baby boy suffered from undiagnosed silent reflux for his first two months of life until we were introduced to Dr M, who quickly diagnosed the issue and expediently advised us on what to do. Since then, he’s become our go-to adviser on anything related to our children’s health. We’ve found him to be knowledgeable, accessible and spot on in his diagnoses. Our children have grown so fond of him that, although we now live abroad, the children want to wait for their paediatrician visit until Dr M is available. Tey even look forward to their vaccinations with him, as his fun bedside manner make the shots rather memorable. We’re thrilled to have had his expert advice through the years and thoroughly recom- mend him,” said Belen del Amo. “My four children adore Dr Mark-

iewicz. I think that’s the greatest testament to what an amazing doctor he is. His incredible diag- nostic skills and reassuring manner makes both parents and children feel safe,” said Andrea Lucas. “Dr Mike has never missed a beat

with our three children, and they all love him! Day or night, he’s always been there for us. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Dr M,” said Mr and Mrs Grodner. “If you and your children find your

way into his practice, count yourself lucky as it doesn’t get better than this: no matter where you are in the world, Dr Markiewicz will be only a phone call away,” said Viktoria Niederhofer. “As new parents in the midst of a

global pandemic, we’ve been feeling safe and relaxed thanks to the profes- sional care of Dr Markiewicz. We feel lucky to have such a professional, caring, efficient and reliable paedi- atrician, who uses evidence-based medicine, for our son. He’s certainly the best there is! Tank you Dr Mark- iewicz,” said Marina Ben-Haim.

“Aside from Dr Markiewicz’s dili-

gence, his availability, however crazy in demand he is, and his extra care — he’s a doctor in a million when it comes to his connections and refer- rals. He’s sent us to colleagues who have never let us down in their field over the past nearly two decades. Mike will always be a friend to my family,” said Clio Georgiadis. “We’re beyond thankful that

we were able to be paired with Dr Markiewicz and though we hope to have as little necessity for him on a professional level as possible, we have a profound comfort in knowing that he’s in our daughter’s corner if needed,” said Felix Anderson. “Being a first-time parent can

be pretty daunting, but ever since we’ve started seeing Dr Markie- wicz, it’s made us breathe a little bit easier. He’s been incredibly acces- sible, very quick to diagnose any issues and, where necessary, allay any fears. We feel confident that our daughter is in excellent hands — he strikes the right balance between telling us when there’s no need to be concerned and acting quickly when issues need addressing. Our daughter actually looks forward to going to see him and calls out to Dr Markiewicz every time we walk past the hospital! Tat’s pretty unusual for a two-year-old and we feel very fortunate to have him as our paedi- atrician,” said Jane Cooper. “My son and I really love Dr

Michael Markiewicz! He’s not only a truly professional and excellent physician — always well informed, skilled and efficient — but he’s also very caring and always there to provide professional advice. He was always there for us, even on the late nights and weekends when we needed him the most. I highly recommend Dr Michael Markie- wicz. My son really loves him. Not all heroes wear capes — they also wear doctor’s scrubs like him,” said Nadejda Savcova.

“Mike is a highly experienced and

thorough paediatrician that parents can trust. He’s always on call and responsive as well as clear and confi- dent in his diagnosis and course of treatment. He has enviable levels of energy and an admirable passion for children’s health. My personal expe- rience when he treated my daughter for pneumonia, which was a highly stressful situation, was that he had the right mix of urgency given the seriousness of the illness, and reas- surance that we’d get through it. I’d unhesitatingly recommend Mike to any parent,” said Peter Wight.
