What is Montessori education?
T e demand for Montessori education is growing, but what is it and how could it benefi t your child? Michel Capobianco, Head of School at the Maria Montessori Institute pre-school and school for two to 12-year-olds in London explains
Prince George attended a Montes- sori nursery and other Montes- sori alumni include the founders of Google, Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. What makes this type of education diff erent? Italian doctor Maria Montessori observed how children learn for themselves and developed an approach and materials to support this. Montessori builds on children’s natural desire to learn and nurtures academic skills and character development. Montes- sori children become confi dent, creative, responsible, hugely empa- thetic and highly independent. T is seems very relevant to today’s world. It’s possible to call a school
Montessori even if it doesn’t have any Montessori trained teachers. So, how can you recognise if a Montes- sori setting is the ‘real deal’? Key features of authentic Montessori education include:
• An aesthetic and enticing environ- ment, specifi cally designed for chil- dren at each stage of their develop- ment — equipment is child-sized and materials are easy-to-reach. T e classroom is meticulously cared for, which encourages the children to take care of it too.
• Mixed-age groups — classes have bigger age ranges, which means younger children learn by watching
older children, while older ones benefi t from the experience of helping younger children.
• Child-led learning — children choose their activities and return materials to the shelf after they’ve used them. T ere’s an atmosphere of calm and children concentrate for
surprising periods of working alone or with others.
• A specially trained adult — a Montessori teacher is highly skilled at observing the capacities of each child and off ers new challenges when they’re ready. T e teacher won’t interfere unless a diffi culty arises, in which case they’ll give just enough help to get the child back on track.
