What iff waste wasn’t wasted?

Discover how Biffa is helping businesses reduce their environmental impact, as waste management regulations are set to change

“At Biffa we do more than collect and process waste,” said Roger Wright, waste strategy and packaging manager at Biffa. “We recycle over 10 billion plastic items each year into high-quality flake and pellets. You might expect this of us. But we also do some things you might not expect. “Last year Biffa trialled AI sorting

at one of its recycling facilities; supported smart barcodes on pack- aging to trace the waste journey; began upcycling its diesel refuse vehicles

to electric powertrains;

supported the homewares company ReBorn on a new recycled kitchen- ware product line; and trialled reus- able pint glasses at football matches with Greene King. He continued, “We also helped

thousands of businesses prepare for and manage new regulations. As the UK and devolved governments’ resources and waste strategies roll out, UK businesses face a period of unprecedented change in the way waste and recycling are collected and processed. Having the right partner to bring stability through this transition is critical. “Biffa helps businesses manage

the materials flowing through their operations, from consulting on packaging to sustainable manage- ment at end-of-life. We can offer support with staying ahead of regulations, reducing costs and managing waste sustainably.”

What iff recycling was simpler? From 6 April 2024, new Welsh Government rules on the collec- tion and disposal of business waste come into force. Tis will be followed by similar regulation with Simpler Recycling being rolled out in England. Lorah Avery, Biffa’s South Wales

regional commercial manager, said, “From April 6th, all businesses, charities and public sector organisa- tions operating in Wales will need to separate food waste, paper/card, glass, metal/plastics/cartons, unsold textiles and small electricals into six separate containers.” She continued, “Te scheme will also include bans on any food waste

entering a sewer, any waste segre- gated as above going to landfill, and any wood waste going to landfill. “Te policy aims to improve the

quality and quantity of recyclable materials recovered from work- places to support the nation’s emis- sions and waste reduction strategies. We’ve proactively helped Welsh busi- nesses prepare, garnering impor- tant learnings which may be useful for any others looking toward their own compliance with waste regula- tions. We’re on hand to provide the same support to English businesses gearing up for Simpler Recycling. “For example, the lack of consist-

ency in requirements between the UK and its devolved nations could

create difficulties for those operating on national contracts. Ensuring employees across the country are trained in the right practices for their domestic rules is also no small ask. “By taking part in workplace

recycling, businesses are supporting Wales’s target of 70% recycling by 2025, marking a major contribution to the UK’s goal of becoming net zero by 2050. As Simpler Recycling rolls out in England this will help improve the falling recycling rates. “Recycling more

and recycling better helps keep valuable materials

in

materials the UK,

meaning they do not have to be replaced with new materials — most

of which are imported through global supply chains. Recycling not only protects resources, but in many cases, it reduces carbon emissions.” Biffa continues to help businesses

of all sizes across the UK reduce waste,

recycle more out more. Biffa,
