Digitising GP registrations to enhance the patient experience
How Netcompany is supporting NHS England’s Transformation Directorate
In 2021, NHS England’s Transforma- tion Directorate set up a programme that aims to reduce administrative burden for GP practices, improve the quality of data held centrally and
provide patients with an
easy to follow, accessible registra- tion process. GP practices process 6.8 million
registrations a year, and one of the programme’s key priorities was to digitise, improve and streamline that GP registration process. With Netcompany’s background
in supporting responsible digitisa- tion across all areas of public life, the company was selected to support NHS England on this transformation journey. Working closely with NHS England’s dedicated in-house team, Netcompany helped launch the online ‘Register with a GP surgery’ service in August 2022 — an offering it continues to expand today for both patients and GP practices. Digitisation of the process
shortens processing time, improves the quality of the data captured at the point of registration and can enhance
patient participating experience. practices, For patients
can now register from the comfort of their homes, removing the need to visit surgeries in person to collect and submit paperwork. Originally, NHS England had the
ambition of reaching 2,000 GP prac- tices participating in the programme
by the end of 2023. With the joint team including Netcompany, this was achieved a month before the deadline. By the end of November 2023, 2,100 surgeries enrolled and an estimated 750,000 patient registra- tions were processed via the digital channel. Almost half of the registra- tion forms were submitted outside normal GP surgery opening hours, and one in ten accessed the digital service in another language, proving the value of the new channel. Today, more than 2,500 practices
use the national online service, with over one million patients opting to submit registrations this way. Te Register with a GP surgery
service consists of an online regis- tration service and a new paper form. It’s available to all practices across England free of charge and can be found by patients directly on a GP surgery’s local website, on the NHS England website and the NHS App. Registration is quick and easy and includes initial pre-checks such as a practice catchment area check to further improve patients’ experience.
