A Stray Asia bus pass also gives access to plenty of
overland travel in the country. Cross-border trains between Thailand and Malaysia opened again in summer 2022, following closure due to the global pandemic. Reach Kuala Lumpur this way to see the Petronas Towers and other city-based attractions. Further train travel reaches out to the Cameron Highlands for verdant greenery, Penang for historic architecture and to Melaka for street food at night. There is also the option to travel direct by boat between
Thailand and Malaysia, from Koh Lipe and Langkawi, between mid-October and May. From Kuala Lumpur, it’s another train to reach Singapore. This route can be taken individually at a slower pace or with companies, like the Eastern & Oriental Express, which runs a three-day luxury train journey between Bangkok and Singapore.
SINGAPORE TO AUSTRALIA The stretch between Asia and Australia is where it is a little trickier. From Singapore, it’s possible to get as far down as Bali via a scheduled ferry, but there are no regular passenger ships between Singapore or Indonesia down to Australia. While island hopping to Timor-Leste is possible by ferry, and is closer to Darwin’s coast, there are no ferries running from this point. The only way to travel overland from Southeast Asia and Australia is via a passenger-carrying freighter. These get booked up very quickly as demand is high and they can occasionally leave a day or two ahead of schedule to meet freighter needs. It’s advisable at this point to get a flight, with Singapore having direct flights to many Australian cities, like Melbourne, Perth and Cairns.
