Are your children picking at their packed lunch? Follow in the footsteps of Funky Lunch founder Mark Northeast, and make food fun. Words: Sam Lewis
decade ago, Mark Northeast was like any ordinary dad, trying cheer up a grumpy four-year-old
who didn’t want anything for lunch one day. Mark could have let him go without, but instead he created a space rocket sandwich of ham with cheese stars and a cucumber planet. Today, the father-of-two runs
creative food workshops in primary schools, encouraging children to use their imagination and be creative with ingredients — and then eat their creations: “At first, children turn their nose up at the healthy ingredients that I bring in, but at the end of the day you look around and see clean plates. Kids who say they don’t eat red pepper do, and teachers who see what the child has eaten can’t believe it. “We used to be told off
for playing with our food, but the best way to get kids to eat a meal using healthy ingredients is to get them involved in creating their own, and to encourage them to explore the textures, shapes and colours of different foods. They’re

far more likely to eat something they’ve made than something just put in front of them.” For parents
starting out,
Northeast suggests some easy lunchbox recipes, but advises

Clockwise from above: funky smoothie, owl egg sandwich and dinosaur sandwich
Funky smoothie Blitz any healthy ingredients you have to hand (frozen berries, a banana, et cetera) in a blender, then pour into a glass. Cut a grape in half to make eyes and pop them on the end of straws. Cut a strawberry and arrange in the shape of lips on the rim of the glass.
Cheesy caterpillar Make a face on a cherry tomato using cucumber skin and cheddar, then line up other tomatoes and mozzarella balls for the body.
Dinosaur sandwich Use square sandwich thins with perforation holes. Cut out a corner to form the jaw and neck, then add a cheese eye and teeth. Fill with something healthy like hummus, cheese or chicken.
Owl egg sandwich Slice a hard-boiled egg and use two pieces for big eyes, then add something small like raisins for the pupil. Set on a slice of brown bread (crusts removed) and mix the rest of the egg with mayon- naise to create the owl’s chest. Use a carrot to make the nose and feet.
