Mudam Luxembourg – Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean
Mudam Luxembourg is an unmissable stop for tourists this year
At the intersection of contemporary architecture and historical heritage, it provides a space for people to en- gage with the country’s culture in a new way. Te institution is currently deep in preparation mode for a roster of events and installations through- out 2026 — from its Celebration Week in July to its upcoming exhibition on women Japanese artists. Here, direc- tor Bettina Steinbrügge reveals what visitors can expect.
WHAT EXHIBITIONS ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS YEAR? I’m particularly looking forward to our exhibition on the Japanese women avant-garde at the end of the year. It
will introduce audiences to a remark- able artistic legacy that’s rarely been seen in Europe, offering new perspec- tives on a crucial yet often overlooked chapter of art history. ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ is an-
other exciting exhibition. It will take us back to the 1980s and revisit the ideas and cultural energy of that pe- riod, while also reflecting on what’s become of them today. Te exhibition will go beyond art in a narrow sense, bringing together visual art, MTV culture, graphic design and broader forms of media.
CELEBRATION WEEK IS COMING IN JULY. WHAT CAN VISITORS EXPECT? We’ll celebrate with a full week of events in July, beginning with an of- ficial ceremony followed by a garden party
featuring a surprise perfor-
mance by a young superstar — yet to be revealed. We’ll also host a large outdoor party with artistic dis- plays and DJs, creating a vibrant and festive atmosphere. Troughout the week, admission
will be free, inviting everyone to join us and experience Mudam in a cele- bratory and welcoming spirit.
WHAT’S KIDS TAKEOVER DAY? Te museum will quite literally be taken over by children, who’ll help shape what happens throughout the day. Our team is working closely with different groups of children to devel- op the programme, giving them a real voice in the process. When we first introduced this format
two years ago, it was incredibly joyful and inspiring to experience the mu-
seum through the eyes of the younger generation. It reminds us how open and imaginative a museum can be.
WHAT’S THE UPCOMING THE BANK PROJECT AND WHY IS IT AN UN- MISSABLE INSTALLATION? Te Bank is a new project by the re- nowned Danish artist collective SU- PERFLEX. We invited them to activate the park surrounding Mudam and to create an intergenerational space that welcomes all visitors. Over the next two years, the project will unfold both outdoors and inside the museum. It invites visitors to engage directly with architectural elements inspired by Mudam’s building, encouraging them to transform and reinterpret forms in playful and creative ways.

WHY IS MUDAM LUXEMBOURG SO INTEGRAL ON A LUXEMBOURG ITINERARY? Mudam is in a truly unique setting. It’s located on the site of Fort Tün- gen and surrounded by beautiful Dräi Eechelen Park, making it an ideal place not only for culture, but also for spending time outdoors. Visitors can explore two museums within walk- ing distance, Mudam and the Musée Dräi Eechelen, while also enjoying the nearby Philharmonie Luxembourg. Our programme is dynamic, dense
and forward-looking, but it’s always designed to invite visitors to actively
engage. We want people not just to observe, but to experience and par- ticipate, whether through inspiring tours and workshops or more infor- mal drop-in formats. Contemporary art can sometimes feel complex, but we aim to open it up, making it ac- cessible and even playful at times. Ideally, visitors leave with a sense of curiosity, having learned something new, and feeling inspired to look at the world differently.
