IKÓ Yerba Mate: the feel-good alternative to coffee
Real good flavour, feel good energy W
hat on earth is yerba mate? Pronounced ‘mah-tei’, this delicious, natural plant
stimulant has been an obsession in South America for generations. Te tea it makes, known simply as ‘mate’, is a smooth pick-me-up without the jittery rush of coffee.
Oh really? And how does that work? Described as having the ‘strength of coffee, the health benefits of tea and the euphoria
of chocolate’,
research attributes its unique potency to three xanthines that occur natu- rally in the plant: caffeine, theobro- mine and theophylline.
OK, tell me more In 1964, the Pasteur Institute and
Paris Scientific Society concluded
that ‘it’s difficult to find a plant in any area of the world equal to mate in nutritional value.’ Yerba mate has been described as a ‘liquid vegetable’.
Why haven’t I heard of it before? Faff is likely the main obstacle for many would-be mate drinkers. It doesn’t come in teabags, and you can’t just chuck it in with boiling water. Te leaves are carefully prepared in a gourd with hot water at no more than 82C (or it risks becoming too bitter). It’s then sipped through a metal ‘bombilla’.
So what’s IKÓ then? IKÓ is the lightly sparkling energy drink that combines the feel good zip of mate with naturally sweet agave and a little lime juice for balance. What you get is a wonderfully
refreshing iced-tea drink with a deli- cious, light herbal finish. It’s good for the planet too. IKÓ’s
goal is to build a supply chain that fuels regenerative agriculture. Te company sources its yerba mate from agroforestry farms in Brazil where trees are planted alongside crops to support soil health and, over time, increase biodiversity, thus negating the need for fertilizers and pesticides.
