Cosmetic teeth bonding, pioneered at Progressive Dentistry


You’ve probably heard of cosmetic bonding, the ‘hot new trend’ that’s currently splashed across social media. However, Progressive Dentistry has been using this technique for over a decade, pioneered by Dr Nissit Patel

hat is cosmetic bonding? Te beauty is in the simplicity of this aesthetic


treatment, which can make one or several of your teeth look nicer. For example, if you have chipped or uneven teeth, or gaps between your teeth, Progressive Dentistry can correct this with bonding. Te major advantage is that there’s


no need to drill away any tooth to provide the treatment in most cases. As a result, cosmetic bonding is reversible. Traditional cosmetic dental tech-


niques involving porcelain veneers, for example, can be destructive, requiring teeth down to be cut down. But why cut away the hardest tissue in the body when we can add to it? With a technique like cosmetic


bonding, there’s no risk at all to the underlying tooth. Te worst that could happen is that it chips, stains, or becomes discoloured. Not a problem, because the bonding can simply be replenished without fuss.


How is it done? Tere are a few simple steps. Progressive Dentistry also recommend that you whiten your teeth prior to treatment for the best end results.


1. Te tooth is washed with an acid etch


of phosphoric acid (30%)


for 15-30 seconds. Tis sounds harsh but enamel is a mineral. It can take it. Te etch enhances the bonding.


2. A bonding resin is placed over the tooth and is activated by a light. LED light is used these days, which generates less heat that the previ- ously favoured halogen lights.


3. Te white filling material is then layered over the tooth sequen- tially and set with the light. Te practise uses Empress Direct and GC G-aenial as its preferred composites.


4. Once the tooth is built back up, it’s contoured to size and polished in a few steps with lots of water.


Te bite is checked and the final polish is completed.
