From keyless locks to lamps that detect falls, we look at some of the best products on the market (or in development) to improve safety and mobility within the home. Words: Rhonda Carrier

A

ccording to Statistica, around 3.7 million people aged 65+ lived alone in the UK in 2020 — a number

that will continue to rise. Smart-home tech can make life easier both for them and their relatives by providing a 24/7 connection and assistance with everyday tasks made more difficult by reduced vision, decreased mobility and the increased risk of falls. Most starter smart home products are inexpensive and simple to set up with a smartphone and are often controllable remotely. Using a hub such as Alexa or Google Assistant can streamline everything (multiple apps can take up a lot of space on a phone) as well as allowing voice command of smart devices.

Apple Watch Series 6 Tis stylish smartwatch can detect falls and certain types of cardiac event and send out an immediate call for help. It also supports HomeKit, enabling voice-command control of your smart devices. £509, AO.com

Nobi Smart Lamp Tis award-winning product uses AI to detect falls (as well as burglaries and smoke), even in the dark. After asking the elderly person if they’re okay, it contacts family members or, if necessary, alerts emergency services and opens the door for them. Research into CBD and anxiety

Satipharm Advanced CBD capsules have been shown to be 3.5 times more effective than bottled CBD oils, and the company is studying the effects

M

ental health is a rising global health challenge, particu- larly in the past 14 months.

Over 19 million adults in Great Britain reported high levels of anxiety during lockdown, according to a recent report by

the Office for National

Statistics. It found that over a third of adults claimed the Covid-19 pandemic had affected their wellbeing.

Symptoms of anxiety Individual symptoms vary, but can include: • Poor concentration • Difficulty getting to or staying asleep • Nightmares • Migraine and tension headaches • Irritability or poor mood

Can CBD help? CBD works with the body’s internal endocannabinoid system. Currently, no CBD products have been registered in the UK for the treatment of anxiety or management of symptoms, but researchers are currently studying the impact of CBD on numerous conditions, including anxiety, stress and insomnia, and Satipharm is currently conducting its own research.

Satipharm’s clinical trial in anxiety Satipharm has partnered with Emyria to conduct a clinical trial in anxiety. Te trial is being guided by insights from Emyria’s data, which includes efficacy data from more than 3,500 patients and provides deep insight into how the Satipharm product performs clinically. Te trial is designed to validate whether or not taking Satipharm Advanced CBD significantly improves symptoms of anxiety.
