A new cellulite treatment

ONDA Coolwaves is a powerful new treatment that reduces cellulite across the body

T

he lowdown: 80 to 90% of all women have cellulite — whether it’s clinging to the

backs of legs, spreading across hips or concentrated on the bottom. And tackling the lumps and bumps is frustratingly tricky. Scientists have worked for years to try to fi nd eff ective and long-lasting treatments for cellu- lite with little success. T ere are many methods and products that claim to treat or reduce the appearance of cellulite, from topical creams to oils, body scrubs and massagers. And, of course, invasive surgery.

What causes cellulite? Cellulite is caused when the skin over- lying fat (mostly on thighs, stomach, bottom, and arms) is pulled down- wards by fi brous connective tissue. T e collagen fi bres between skin and muscle separate the fat into multiple pockets; with age, the skin becomes thinner and loses elasticity, exposing the rippling beneath.

Treating cellulite T ere are so many diff erent options out there for cellulite treatment — from creams that claim to attack fi brous bands to surgical options, which come with risks, down- time, pain and, of course, that hefty price tag. New kid on the block, ONDA, the latest launch from DEKA, is putting a stop to orange peel with its clever Coolwaves system. T e inno- vative microwave technology, which took scientists 25 years to perfect, is delivered to lumpy areas by what looks like a small, hand-held torch. By bypassing the upper layers of the skin, it delivers more energy to the subcutaneous fat cells, where it works to break down localised fat pockets and cause apoptosis or cell death. It also stimulates the connective tissue, helping to smooth the appearance of wobble, while causing collagen fi bres in the dermis to contract and become more compact, thus tightening and toning the skin. It takes roughly 30 minutes per area to treat — and best of all, you can lie down and take a nap while it’s all happening.

Pain factor None, bar some mild warmth. In fact, the sensation is more akin to a relaxing, hot stone massage in a spa.

With a healthy diet and regular exercise, the results will last, as the fat globules that occur within advanced cells are removed from the lymphatic system

Downtime

None whatsoever — no redness, no swelling, no indescribable itching. Carry on as you were.

Results

Admittedly, it’s not an overnight sensa- tion — you’ll need a minimum of four treatments, spaced one month apart, to really notice a diff erence. But course complete, there’s a defi nite reduc- tion in cellulite wrinkle depth, while skin feels smoother and springier (85% of case studies reported a signifi cant improvement in ‘orange peel’).

Better yet, with a healthy diet and regular exercise, the results will last longer, as the fat globules that occur within advanced cells

removed from lymphatic system.

silhouette isn’t far away

“I’m very excited about this technology,” says Dr Kuldeep Minocha, the medical director at Tempus Belgravia. “Really eff ec- tive cellulite treatment is rare, and patients are very averse to pain, but with this, there’s a little heating of the dermis but no real pain, yet excellent results.”
