A FOUR-NIGHT STAY IN THE LAKE DISTRICT
National Geographic Traveller (UK) has teamed up with Graythwaite Holiday Cottages to offer a stay in a country cottage in scenic Cumbria
THE DESTINATION Nowhere epitomises England’s green and pleasant land like the Lake District. A vast swathe of picture- perfect scenery, it’s a perennial favourite for a staycation — and with good reason. This is a natural playground for all kinds of adventure, from water sports on Windermere to the challenging climbs of the region’s famous fells. For more gentle pursuits, there are historic houses, stone circles, or the area’s industrial heritage to explore, while at night, the quality of the dark skies are some of the UK’s best for stargazing. Given the Lake District’s literary heritage, there are plenty of cultural activities, too, including the Beatrix Potter Gallery at Hawkshead, and the pretty village of Grasmere, with its connections to William Wordsworth.
THE PRIZE Courtesy of Graythwaite Holiday Cottages, the winner and up to nine guests (dependent on local regulations) will enjoy a four-night, mid-week stay at Holmewell House on the Graythwaite Estate, near Windermere. Bathed in natural light, the property was fully restored in September 2019 and offers a classically stylish stay in one of the country’s most beautiful corners of countryside. The five-bedroom cottage, with its own private jetty, is perfectly positioned for a rural escape, with the Lake District’s many attractions and hiking trails in easy reach. Aſter a romp in the fells, return to luxurious homely touches, including underfloor heating, a Sonos sound system, welcome hamper and even an electric Aga range cooker.
