Tales from Wales I thoroughly enjoyed Julia Buckley’s enchanting article on Wales’ Coastal Way in the Sept/Oct 2020 issue recently. It brought back so many happy memories of childhood holidays on the Welsh coast, particularly in the village of Aberdovey — now known as Aberdyfi — where our holiday cottage (we always stayed in the same one) was, on what must be the steepest road in the world. I can still picture it all: the beach went on for an eternity and the sun never stopped shining — that’s really how I remember it! The article also reminded me of a long-forgotten day out at the Italian-style village of Portmeirion, which, to my 10-year-old eyes, seemed utterly magical. I haven’t been back to that beautiful coastline in far too long, but when things return to some sort of normal, I’ll be there in a shot. ESTHER SPENCER
Armchair travels Your pages have provided the opportunity for some self-indulgent ‘virtual’ travel during this difficult year. Thanks to you, I’ve been able to use my imagination and escape to some amazing places — and then add them to my bucket list, which grows longer by the day. I especially enjoyed the insight into the walking safari in Kenya in the Sept/Oct 2020 issue; having visited the Kruger National Park, I’ve been keen to experience something more remote. Frustrated by not being able to get away, I pounce on my copy of Traveller as soon as it arrives and then have to ration myself to a few pages a day! JENNI GOWAN
Right on track I’ve always loved a hiking holiday, and so found it inspiring to read Mark Parren Taylor’s photo story on Japan’s Nakasendō Trail (Sept/Oct 2020). Any epic hike that combines history, culture and spectacular views is well worth doing in my eyes (not to mention local food, of course), so I’ve been busy looking into booking a hiking holiday in Japan as soon as I can. The best part of a hike is meeting the locals — it’s amazing how hospitable and knowledgeable they oſten are, and it’s always the highlight of any trip. Six months ago, I’d never heard of the Nakasendō Trail, but now it’s right at the top of my ‘must-visit’ list. IAN YOUNG
