New builds & developments Country living

Across Somerset, new-builds are focusing on key features to ensure they blend into the county’s rural lifestyle, fi nds Marc Shoff man

N

ew-builds may be associated with more modern living, but developers in Somerset are

ensuring buyers get the best of the county’s traditional rural setting. Buyers can now access the

West Country lifestyle in newly built homes that stay true to the surrounding environment by being more energy-effi cient and making use of local materials.

ENERGY-EFFICIENT Developer Habershon Land has just completed a seven-property Hornbeam Lane development, a mixture of bungalows and detached homes in the east Somerset town of Frome. It’s also due to start work on a new development of six homes near Castle Carey along the same lines. “We want to make houses greener

and greener — that’s our main mission over anything else,” says William Habershon, managing director. “T e government wants to bring more than 300,000 homes a year to the UK. T at takes up a lot of

land, so by doing little clusters you retain an element of the countryside.” All the roofs on the houses have

solar panels and are powered by electricity, with no gas or oil systems. T ere are also inbuilt bird boxes to cater for local nature. Developers are following the green

theme in the market town of Bruton, where Acorn Property Group’s Cubis Bruton scheme combines modern architecture designed for idyllic rural living. T e homes — designed by land artist Mark Merer — are set up to be energy-effi cient and have striking plant roofs designed to blend in with the surrounding landscape. Each home has a fl exible open-plan

design, with a contemporary fi tted kitchen as well as at least two parking spaces. T ere are 56 open market units of three- and four-bedroom homes from £330,000, 12 of which are aff ordable units. Help to Buy can also be used on the scheme.

CLOSE TO NATURE Bloor Homes is building 100 new properties less than two miles from the centre of Keynsham, which is situated on the confl uence of the rivers Avon and Chew. T e development is surrounded by woodland, rivers and streams, ideal for those who love the great outdoors or who are simply looking to live in a tranquil location. T e homes incorporate traditional

materials such as Blue Lias stone, red brick and red Roman and reconstituted slate roof tiles. Designed to work with the

COMBINING OLD AND NEW Developers are also making use of historical buildings. Acorn Property Group is redeveloping the former site of Butler, Tanner & Dennis, once one of Britain’s foremost book printers. T e Old Printworks is a collection

of 140 one-, two-, three- and four- bedroom homes located in Frome. T e site is set to have around 18 aff ordable homes. Robin Squire, regional managing

director at Acorn Property Group, says: “T ere’s no shortage of quaint villages to make home or visit in Somerset. Every scheme is unique and off ers something quite diff erent, but the West Country is defi nitely fi nding new fans.”
