23 OCTOBER 2021 • HEALTHCARE INNOVATIONS DISTRIBUTED WITH THE SATURDAY DAILY MAIL Innovative healthcare and alternative remedies Breathe easier, live better
What’s the weather going to be like today? It’s a frequent question that many of us ask daily, but one that has much larger implications for those with lung disease and respiratory issues
Whether it’s summer or winter, rain or shine, people with issues like COPD, asthma, bronchitis, cystic fi brosis and emphysema should and often do pay crit- ical attention to the weather forecast, as there are a number of elements related to weather that aff ect our body. T ese include air tempera-
ture, relative humidity, wind chill factor, air quality index and pollen count. Our lungs contain mucus
sitting on hairs called cilia. T ese hairs beat back and forwards to transport the mucus up and out of our lungs so we can cough it up. T e key thing to remember is
that all the changing weather conditions can cause infl am- mation. Our body then creates excess mucus as a means of protecting itself and that’s why lungs can become clogged. It’s diffi cult to clear the clogged lungs and subsequently your breathing issues get worse.
HOT AND HUMID EFFECTS Hot weather can be especially diffi cult for people with respira- tory conditions. Inhaling hot air is known to promote airway infl ammation
and exacer-
bate respiratory disorders like COPD. Some think the reason is due to dehydration of the airways. Unfortunately, people with
asthma have hypersensitive airways already, so this just further
increases the breath- lessness they experience.
COLD AND DRY EFFECTS Weather is more likely to have an impact during the colder winter months. Cold weather, and particu-
larly cold air, can also be problematic for your lungs and health as colder air is heavier and can trap pollution.
BE PROACTIVE AND BE PREPARED You can’t control the weather, but you can reduce the eff ect it has on your lung disease symp- toms with the following tips. • If it’s warm inside, consider adding air conditioning to your home in the summer to ensure you can regulate a consistent temperature.
• When it’s cold outside, wear a loosely wrapped scarf around your mouth and nose to warm the air before it enters your lungs. Breathe in through your nose and out through your mouth.

• Air pollution — monitor air quality forecasts as this can change with both hot and cold weather. • Remember
to take your
prescribed controller medica- tions such as inhalers.
WHAT IS AIRPHYSIO? AirPhysio is an Australian-made, drug-free medical device that uses an all-natural process called oscillating positive expir- atory pressure (OPEP). T e device aids
mucus and expanding the lungs.
WHY IS AIRPHYSIO NEEDED? Many people with respiratory issues experience a condition known as mucus dysfunction. T is occurs when the airway walls either become infected or infl amed as a result of a change in the weather or the inhala- tion of foreign particles such as bacteria, viruses, smoke, fumes and so on. T e airway walls release an amount
excessive of mucus
into the airways to help protect them — this then leads to a build up of mucus, which in turn leads to closed and semi-closed airways due to the presence of mucus plugs. T e

blockages as well as improve the general hygiene of the lungs. T e coughing can also improve overall lung capacity.

the body’s natural cough mech- anism, which helps move the mucus up to the throat to be swallowed or coughed out.
