HOW SHOULD I LOOK AFTER MY BACK? T e best thing is to stay active. Walking is very good exercise; it helps to maintain muscle strength and balance in the spine. Between 20 and 30 minutes of walking, three or four times a week, can help manage fl are-ups in pain, which are very common. If the pain persists despite this and isn’t controlled by simple painkillers after a few weeks, then see your GP or physiothera- pist. T e majority of people have back pain that’s self-limiting and subsides within a few weeks.
DID LOCKDOWN HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE TYPES OF SPINAL PROBLEMS PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING? A signifi cant proportion of patients coming through the clinic date the onset of their symptoms to the start of the lockdown. T is may be for several reasons, including less physical activity, more sedentary working and an inability or reluctance to see a medical practitioner when the pain started. Many patients have suff ered many months of
severe, debilitating symptoms for problems that are often rela- tively simple to treat. One of the common features was a reluc- tance to have a consultation for fear

DO HOSPITALS TAKE ANY SPECIAL MEASURES DUE TO COVID-19? As with many aspects of Covid-19, the measures being taken changed as the national picture and guidelines changed. Currently, the meas- ures to protect patients from the virus fall into three categories: • Before hospital attendance: T e clinic aims to make sure as much is done before your hospital appointment, to keep your time in the hospital to a minimum. For example, this
can involve the use same-day scanning. of
• During your hospital visit: T e clinic ensures all national guidelines are adhered to, that your care is carried out in a Covid-19-safe way and that any further treatment required is expedited.
• After discharge: Any further hospital visits are kept to an absolute minimum. Some of the specifi c measures currently being used by the clinic are described in the link at bottom of this page.

Why choose an oculoplastic surgeon when thinking about eyelid surgery?
Consultant ophthalmologist Mr Ahmad Aziz summaries a proce- dure that’s gaining popularity. Eyelid blepharoplasty is the
nip-and-tuck procedure for the eyelids that people are increas- ingly having for a fresh and rejuvenated look to the face. Depending on which report you read, eyelid surgery is one of the top fi ve cosmetic proce- dures performed for both men and women. T ere are diff erent approaches to eyelid surgery. Generally it’s divided into upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery, although both can be done at the same time. Lower eyelid surgery tends to address the eye bags that can give a puff y appearance below the eyes. More recent develop- ments have meant that this can be performed without leaving a scar on the skin. Upper eyelid surgery lifts the drooping of the eyelids that can block vision, disrupt the unwanted contour of the eyelid and make the eyelashes
point downwards.
T e scar is usually hidden in the eyelid skin crease.
With both men and women
going for the procedure, it’s important to choose a surgeon who has plenty of experi- ence performing it. Men tend to have lower set eyebrows, a lower skin crease in the upper eyelid and lower lateral canthal lines or crow’s feet than women. T is makes the surgical
approach slightly
diff erent in both sexes and care needs to be taken in men to avoid a feminising look if that isn’t desired. Oculoplastic surgeons specialise in the area around the eyes and have extensive training on this. T ey’re able to assess the eyes as well as the eyelids to make sure a thor- ough assessment
is
performed to see if someone is suitable for the procedure.
