CONTENTS # 98

Welcome to Summit 98

s Coronavirus started to affect us all, we decided to send this issue of Summit out as a digital-only version. I know from member feedback just how valued Summit is, and I hope that you find this issue just as inspiring as the print copy. We’ll be resuming print copies from the next issue, and every issue is always available online too.

We are currently living through very worrying times. Rest assured though, the BMC is still working hard on your behalf. Alongside our standard ongoing functions, where quite often additional support is being provided, there is a focus on working with partner organisations and the government in getting members through the current lockdown and back into the activities we love, be that hill walking, mountaineering or indoor climbing. By the time this is published, I hope there will be some clarity on the situation.

The last BMC event before lockdown was the hill walking weekend that took part in Ambleside. It really was fantastic and included a very successful meeting, very practical sessions on micro navigation and a fascinating talk by Mary-Ann Ochota. Many thanks to the BMC staff and volunteers for organising such a successful event – I look forward to the next one.

Thanks also to everyone who nominated BMC volunteers for awards this year. There were some great submissions. Please read all about the recipients on the BMC website: Ron Kenyon and Peter Judd have both been awarded the George Band Award; The Rehan Siddiqui Award goes to Jesse Dufton; and the Young Persons Award to Kody Bradley. I look forward to presenting them with their Andy Parkin sculptures at the 2021 AGM, as the 2020 AGM was a virtual event.

Thank you for observing the government advice regarding exercise. Your continued support through this very difficult time is very much appreciated.

Stay safe and I wish you, your family and friends well.
