Seeing Is Believing in the city of
Bilbao BY SARAH PICKERING

ALSO known as ‘The City of Guggenheim’, Bilbao quickly became a city of fascination, hence the nickname related to its infamous museum built in 1997. With architectural divine aplenty paired with modern flair that can be found all across Spain, this character-driven city is now set high on the list for travellers. Situated North,
within the Basque
country, the blend of old and new can be felt throughout as you find your way through the streets. The protruding titanium plates of the Guggenheim Museum sit quietly on the skyline of this city - inside, a world of modern art from across the globe satisfies even the mere novice in this trade. A swirling wind of tasteful art fills its rooms, sharing space with thousands of visitors each year. Designer of Guggenheim museum, Frank Gehry is world- renowned, especially for his works in modern day Europe, proudly hosting pieces such as the Dancing House of Prague and Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris. His unique, yet modern design becomes analogous with Bilbao; a great pair. Speaking of pairs, Bilbao pairs its new and
old through its streets and walkways; its innovative centre marks its futuristic look in modern day tourism, whilst its old town stands proud, labeled with its traditional values and that authentic Spanish feel. Despite its new look and feel, Bilbao still displays its roots with pride, most notably through its ‘seven streets’ - the original hub of the bilbao. With over 700 years of history, it is as much a tourist attraction to see real- life memories live on through these streets, and the old ways of the city aline with its new front-facing art-deco feel. Still, seven streets has transformed to keep up with its new-found fame and is now home to many bustling cafes, restaurants and shops to modernise its old-world feel and look. Stroll along the riverside in Abando, or get a taste of local life in Castaños - you are sure to find the perfect pretty spot to bask (or basque, if you will) in your surroundings. Don’t be fooled by her astounding beauty and graciousness
through architecture -
Bilbao punches well above her weight in gastronomy too. As with the rest of its art, this has been perfected to one of the highest standards, so much so, the entire area of the Basque country has one of the most Michelin Stars per person across the globe. Eateries aplenty, food markets, locally owned restaurants - Bilbao has its all, for all! Famous for its pinchos (its own style of traditional tapas), it becomes a holiday must when visiting the area to indulge in the delights of food which is synonymous with the country as a whole. From the sights and sounds of Bilbao’s bustling streets, to the elegant eats and its gregarious people it, quite clearly, becomes understandable as to why this city is hot on the list for so many.
