February 2026 HISTORIC

CHARM ON THE CAUSEWAY COAST

BY ERIN ENGLISH erin@nitravelnews.com

A wave of nostalgia crashes over you on a trip to the North Coast, fond memories of childhood summers come rushing back as clear as day. From days spent trying your luck at the amusement complexes and thinking you were on the top of the world at the peak of Barry’s famed ‘Big Dipper’ roller coaster, or from the hours spent at the East Strand before falling into a content slumber on the journey home. For many, is

Portrush a

pocket of esteemed childhood memories, a town so engrained within Northern Irish culture that it seems everybody has their own stories to ponder. Even as an adult, when blue skies bloom and the sun comes out, there is an itch to pack up the car or board the train, and embark on a journey up the North Coast. Despite Northern holidaymakers' heading

Irish love for to

sunny pastures abroad, the semantics of the Portrush beach day is inherently traditional. A finely crafted art which has spanned across multiple generations, even in today’s generation where a new hotspot can be discovered with a mere google search, Portrush stands the test of time. Seeking to blow off the cobwebs in

the new year, it was time for a change of

scenery. A brief break from the

sleepy stupor of January, it was time to experience a slice of North Coast living. My base for this stay was The Marcus Portrush, a newly opened Tapestry by Hilton property located in the heart of Portrush. In such a town as Portrush, the arrival of a brand hotel

can spark anxiety

amongst local residents, with fear that the charm and character of the area will be displaced in pursuit of business. Worry not, these fears immediately subside upon first arrival at The Marcus Portrush. From first glance, The Marcus Portrush maintained the utmost respect in historic

Occupying a

heart of the beautifully

restored Victorian building, The Marcus Portrush complex has served as a hotel, an artisan bakery, a dance hall, and a sweet shop. Glimmers of the property’s past remain

in full display at the hotel, including the original mosaic signage, and decorative floor mosaics which are synonymous with the history of the property.

From the

restored tiled façade, depicting ‘Black and Sons’ to the maintained decorative floor mosaics, stepping into reception is quite literally following in the footsteps of the past frequenters.

Stepping into the reception area, the

ambience and open hearth bid you a warm welcome, accompanied by the reception team who are helpful to advise you of everything you need to know for your stay, including breakfast times, information about the two dining options at the hotel, and any information you may require for your time in the North Coast. Arriving just slightly before the check-in time of 3pm, the entire process was simple and seamless with my room ready earlier than expected. It was a good time to head up in the lift to check out my room. Moving from the reception area to the foyer just outside the lifts, history follows

you on

your journey through the property.

After check out, the smart tv automatically disconnects from your device and logs out of all your accounts, a welcome safety feature when connecting your Netflix or Prime streaming account to the television. Seeking some new material

to read

before bed? Fear not, a quirky and unique feature of the property is that it comes with its own story to tell, and its very own fictional adventurer, Marcus.

In each bedroom,

there is a copy of ‘The Adventures of Marcus,’ a comic-book tale of a local boy who embarks on his own sea adventure, meeting a range of characters along the way. A daring adventurer, Marcus invokes guests to ponder their own curiosity and pursuit to explore, encouraging them to look inward to capture their own sense of child-like wonder. In terms

can go for the Nemesis Restaurant located at the back of the property, Nemesis is an asian fusion restaurant which combines the tastes and flavours of Asia with local ingredients from Northern

Ireland. The Heritage Bar was my hang-out spot

for the majority of my stay. In the evening, the ambient lighting and polished wood maintain the values of lavish furnishing, a consistent theme throughout the hotel, without losing that local value of a small- town bar.

smaller side but space has been maximised with tables perched against the back wall, and table seating across the floor. Rather than feeling overcrowded and cramped, the maximisation of space makes the bar feel quaint and cosy, each table is a good space away from the other, meaning you can enjoy privacy while enjoying a pint or a spot of food. Making its mark on the foundation of

North Coast living, the Heritage Bar is enjoyed by both hotel residents and locals alike. Transforming the typical generic hotel

bar into a true local hot-spot,

cultivating a welcoming and authentic atmosphere. A boutique hotel located on the heart of

Portrush main street, The Marcus Hotel is without a doubt a state-of-the-art property on the North Coast. With comfortable and clean bedrooms, and a honed-in eye for interiors and style. However, what captivated me most about the property was its heart. Rather than closing the book on the property’s past, The Marcus Portrush instead welcomes a brand new chapter, maintaining the charming history of the building which stands firm on Portrush’s main street. The Marcus Portrush welcomes you with a warm coastal

allure, embracing the

playful spirit of Portrush with the depiction of its fictional adventurer Marcus, but is it truly fiction? Or is the characterisation of Marcus a familiar ode to our own individual

childhood memories of

Portrush? The Marcus Portrush paves the way for guests to make up their own mind on the matter, but as someone who holds onto memories like cherished treasures, I am convinced of the latter.
