PROFILE SCOOTING TO SUCCESS

When SILVIA DANCHUK received her CPA designation in 2012 while working in utility regulations, she never would’ve guessed she’d be opening her own business three years later. But that’s exactly what happened aſter her two sons (Sawyrr, 11, and Seth, 12) found themselves caught up in the world of scoot- ering and Danchuk realized there weren’t many supplies available where they lived in Alberta. So in 2015, the family opened Wheelz Scooter Shop in Saint Albert, Alta. Today, Danchuk and her husband, Sean, run the business full time — she handles the finances and credits her CPA training for giving her the necessary skills. “Aside from knowing how to budget and forecast, I can navigate a growth industry.” In the spring the shop moved to a new location that includes a 1,500-sq.-ſt. indoor scooter park. But don’t expect to find Danchuk popping wheelies (“I can roll around, but I leave the tricks to the kids!”). Instead, she spends time encouraging girls to hop on a scooter (it’s a boy-dominated sport). “The biggest reward is giving back to the community. This is a safe, fun place for kids and parents and we’re proud to provide that experience.” — Lora Grady

TIME TRAVEL It’s 2017? Really?

LOS ANGELES ENTREPRENEURS Penelope Gazin and Kate Dwyer were sure they had a profitable idea with their online startup Witchsy, a marketplace for ofeat, feminist art. Problem was that the largely male developers they hired to help them were slow-moving and disrespectful. Their solution: bring on a third partner, Keith Mann, who, by the way, just happened to be fictional. “It was like night and day,” Dwyer told Fast Company. “It would take me days to get a response, but Mann could not only get a response and a status update, but he would also be asked if he wanted anything else or if there was anything else that he needed help with.” (Meanwhile, according to recent research from the Pew Research Center, some 59% of US men refuse to believe that sexism exists.) — PC

PAYDAY! PAYDAY! Survey says raises on horizon

EMPLOYERS IN CANADA are expecting salaries to rise by an average of 2.3% next year, according to Morneau Shepell’s annual survey, Trends in Human Resources. In 2017 salaries rose an average of 2.2%. “Employers are relatively optimistic about the coming year,” says Michel Dubé, a principal in Morneau Shepell’s compensation consulting practice. “Those expecting better financial performance in the coming year outnumber those expecting weaker performance by four to one. Despite this optimism, employers are still cautious about salary increases, perhaps reflecting a concern that rising interest rates may dampen economic growth next year.” (The current rate of inflation is about 1%.) The industries most likely to see the biggest rate hikes include utilities, manufacturing and wholesale trade. — PC
