CANADA 150 Why we’re #CPAproud

BY JACLYN LAW CPAs from across Canada share what their designation means to them

Arlene Evangelista,

CPA, CGA WINNIPEG

Fulfi lling a Canadian dream

“Becoming a CPA has been my dream for more than 20 years, ever since I was an accounting student in my home country, the Philippines. After I immigrated to Canada, I worked as an auditor and studied for my CPA designation at night — it took eight years to fi nish. I’m really proud of doing accounting work in Canada, where everything is systematized and the ethics, standards and integrity are extremely high. As a CPA, I feel like I have a better future, personally and professionally. I want to start volunteering because of all the blessings that I have. I want to contribute more to my adopted country.”

Matthew Robinson,

CPA, CA HALIFAX

Applying CPA know-how at work and beyond

“I’m proud to be a CPA because the designation provides a very powerful set of tools. It has a great base in accounting theory, but even more than the specifi c knowledge, it develops skills you can apply in a broader sense in life — skills such as critical thinking, thinking on your feet and the ability to digest information and draw solutions quickly. I work in the construction industry in Atlantic Canada. My day-to-day work involves looking at processes and how we can do things better, and I’m always using the tools from the CPA program. I’m also proud to be a second-generation CPA, CA; I followed in my dad’s footsteps.”

Linda Yao,

CPA, CMA TORONTO

Creating my own path

“I started my career as a developer. Over time, I realized that I was missing fi nancial knowledge when working on IT applications. So I studied to become a CPA, CMA, and that really boosted my consulting career. With my accounting and IT knowledge, I was sought after to provide input to fi nancial system design for IT projects. Now I’m an entrepreneur about to launch a couple of applications to help people and make a difference: postafl yer.com and buyervantage.com. CPA gives me a strong foundation, undeniably. In addition, I’m spending time giving back by volunteering via CPA Canada’s fi nancial literacy program in my community.”
