Case Studies Casting Conversion from Fabrication/Weldment

Purely serving a utilitarian function, park benches are typically not considered anything beyond a functional resting place. Work- ing with customer Autodesk, Aristo-Cast employed generative de- sign to rethink the way we look at and interact with furniture in the public space. The designer wanted to create a piece that causes us to look twice at the humble bench and invite us to engage more, explore the twists and turns, admire the thing that we would nor- mally sit on without a second thought. The size of bench and the intricacies of the form presented a

challenge to addressing this project as a one piece casting. Aris- to-Cast took the approach of casting it in six sections and weld assembling to form the final product. Traditionally, benches can be casted or produced as weld-

ments. The cost to produce a customized bench would typically be prohibitive both on the design side as well as the manufacturing side. With the advent of digital prototyping tools, particularly this new breed of Generative Design software, Aristo-Cast can create several designs to suit different form, function and aesthetics by using the power of cloud computing.

Intrepid and Avalon Collaborate on WCIC Souvenir

In preparation for the 15th World Conference on Invest- ment Casting, the ICI ran a souvenir design contest. There were a number of entries, and the winner, a free-standing MÖbius Strip, came from Feinguss Blank.

Unfortunately, the design

as submitted did not lend itself to the investment casting pro- cess. Stepping up to the challenge, Intrepid Automation, in collaboration with Avalon Precision Metalsmiths, reworked the design, running a number of casting trials which resulted in a producible, yet aesthetic final product which preserved the integrity of the original design. Once the design was locked down and the Avalon and In-

trepid teams were happy with the quality, a schedule was de- veloped to deliver 3D printed patterns from Intrepid to Avalon for casting. From January to April 2020, the two companies completed the order of 1000 pieces. Through this unique collaboration project, the compa- nies successfully manufactured the 15th WCIC souvenir and were able to deliver a product with challenging casting fea- tures which included the complex design, thicker to thin wall sections and small slots to the customer, the ICI. This project demonstrated a collaboration of two ICI member companies exercising their unique expertise. Avalon and Intrepid have continued their relationship into other projects which benefit both companies.
