BREATHE EASY


Soldering work involves both metallic and organic compounds. Ordinary solders themselves contain, besides tin and lead, various levels of zinc, arsenic, cadmium, antimony and other metals. Fluxes necessary for soldering contain activators to enhance their cleaning properties; these activators are typically organic acids. Such compounds, when heated, release byproducts of incomplete combustion, which in turn can contain noxious fumes, particulate matter, aerosols, and gasses. Prolonged breathing of these contaminants can lead to both short and long-term operator irritations and illnesses. Respiratory tract irritation, sore throat, eye irritation and headaches are the most common symptoms. Allergies and asthma are often exacerbated by solder smoke.


Please note that the metals of which solder is made do not themselves vaporize at soldering temperatures. Lead, the metal with the low- est vaporization temperature commonly found in solders, does not become a gas below 2,950° F. What you are really getting rid of is flux smoke, scorched board material and conformal coating. HAKKO Fume Extraction Systems remove these contaminations from the air before the operator can breathe them. Their simplicity and ruggedness ensure many years of service. Filters are disposable and easily changed. A wide selection of accessories are available to meet any fume extraction needs.

from highly flammable liquids or gasses! Serious risk of injury or death due to explosion or fire may occur.


Certain airborne contaminants, when in contact with activated carbon, can undergo chemical reactions resulting in heat. The HAKKO Fume Extraction System MUST NOT be used to extract fumes from these substances.


HAKKO Fume Extraction Systems use a 3-stage filtration process to remove airborne particles. This process involves 2 filters in the HAKKO FA-430 Fume Extraction System: the pre-filter and main filter. The pre-filter works to remove coarse particles such as dust, that may be suspended in the air, and thus extend the service life of the main filter. Particles as small as 30 microns in diameter are trapped by the pre-filter. It should be checked periodically based on usage, or about once a week.


The HAKKO FA-430 has an indica- tor light that indicates when the pre-filter has exhausted its service life and should be replaced. Under normal conditions this will be about once a month.


The main filter purifies the air in two ways. The first is through the pleated media which provides the greatest amount of surface area within the volume of the filter case and traps even smaller particles.


The second is an activated carbon element built into each filter. The activated carbon element of the main filter is designed to last the life of the main filter. Carbon filters have absorption ratings of 80-85%.


When used in tandem, the standard filters in the HAKKO FA-430 Fume Extraction System will provide filtration greater than 98% efficiency for par- ticles as small as 0.3 microns. Optional filter sets are available to provide HEPA level efficiencies of 99.97% as small as 0.3 microns.


Used filters should be handled with care when being disposed. They may contain hazardous substances such as lead, flux residue, asbestos, organic com- pounds, or pollutants extracted from the air.


Always use appropriate personal protection equipment when handling used filters and dispose of them in containment bags. Local regulations will dictate the means of disposal.
