DO YOU KNOW THE USHST?

Since launching Helicopter Maintenance magazine in 2012, I have attended many helicopter events and shows. More often than not, there is a booth at these shows that is manned by a gentleman named Tony Molinaro. Tony, a U.S. government employee, organizes and heads up outreach for the United States Helicopter Safety Foundation (USHST). The USHST is actually a partner of a larger organization called the International Helicopter Safety Foundation (IHSF). Both of these “foundations” have developed over

the years — stemming from an effort that began with a White House commission in 1997 to reduce the aviation fatal accident rate. According to its website www.ushst.org, its vision is a civil helicopter community with zero fatal accidents. Its mission is to do this by establishing partnerships with significant helicopter operations and encourage development and implementation of safety interventions by sharing lessons learned through accident analysis. Even though the USHST technically began as a

government effort, it has evolved into a government/ industry effort. According to the USHST, its structure is made up of a Steering Committee, a Safety Analysis Team (SAT), an Outreach Team, Work Groups, Focus Groups, and Special Emphasis Area Groups. Additionally, the USHST includes Communications/ Marketing Specialist and Team Coordinators. All committees, teams, and groups consist of both government and industry representatives. Would you like to learn more about the USHST and

how you can help? You are in luck! Members of the United States Helicopter Safety

Team (www.USHST.org) will be providing their safety advice for Heli-Expo 2020 participants in

Anaheim at 21 different workshops on a wide variety of topics. Many of the topics link to proposed safety enhancements that the USHST is supporting. Some of the maintenance-related USHST workshops scheduled at Heli-Expo 2020 include: • Elevating Safety Culture and Professionalism Jan. 27, 11:00 am

• Maintenance Safety: First Solutions That Work Jan. 28, 8:00 am

• Aviation Fatigue: Identification and Mitigation Jan. 28, 9:15 am

• Human Factors: Protecting Us from Ourselves Jan. 28, 10:30 am

• BowTie Methodology for Safety Management Jan. 28, 10:30 am and Jan. 29, 1:30 pm

• Good Data Drives Good Decisions: HFDM Jan. 28, 8:00 am

• SMS for Small-Fleet or Private Operators Jan. 29, 1:30 pm

• Managing Complexity to Form a Simple SMS Jan. 29, 2:45 pm

More information about USHST reports, safety

tools, Real Safety presentations and YouTube safety videos also can be obtained at its web site and on the International Helicopter Safety Foundation web site (www.IHSF.aero) and Facebook page. Finally, as this issue represents the first issue we

are publishing in 2020, we would like to thank our subscribers and advertisers for your continued support. We look forward to a great year with a booming economy and to the safest year on record for aviation! Thanks for reading!
