Elephant experiences return Intrepid Travel has added eight trips for next year offering
visits to ethical venues that support elephants and their handlers, known as mahouts. The operator removed elephant rides from its trips in 2014, a move followed by more than 200 firms. On the Explore Thailand and Laos tour (from £1,098, excluding flights), clients can watch elephants in their natural habitat at MandaLao sanctuary in Luang Prabang, while in Thailand, travellers can visit the ChangChil sanctuary. Kuoni, meanwhile, has introduced visits to Chiang Rai’s Elephant Care Centre to its Thailand Explorer escorted tour (11 nights from £2,299, including flights), while Titan Travel features the Elephant Transit Home in Udawalawe on its 12-day Best of Sri Lanka tour (from £2,099, including flights).
Saga adds wildlife itinerary visiting Kenya and Tanzania
Customers can see the wildlife and landscapes featured in last month’s BBC series Serengeti on Saga’s safari tour of Kenya and Tanzania. The nine-night Land of Kilimanjaro offers the chance to spot wildebeest, lions, buffaloes, elephants, giraffes and zebras. Prices start at £3,299 including flights and full-board accommodation.
Latin Routes has begun selling group tours, with departures starting in 2020. Its nine escorted itineraries span Chile, Peru, Costa Rica, Brazil, Argentina and Ecuador,
including the Galápagos. Prices start at £2,699.
Celebrity chef Gennaro Contaldo promotes new Citalia itinerary
Celebrity chef and Citalia ambassador Gennaro Contaldo is promoting a new self-guided Citalia tour called Ultimate Italy, which celebrates his 70th birthday this year. The 25-day itinerary starts with an overnight journey on the Venice Simplon-Orient- Express then takes in Venice, Lake Garda, Verona, Florence, Rome, Sorrento and Sicily, along with lesser-known foodie spots. Prices start at £7,877, including flights and rail travel.
EasyJet ups Jordan frequency for winter
EasyJet is set to double frequency between Gatwick and Jordan’s Red Sea resort of Aqaba this winter. The service will increase to twice weekly from October 29 until March 28, 2020. The launch of the route in August 2018 has boosted visitor numbers to Aqaba, which offers adventure tours, snorkelling and scuba diving, as well as easy access to Jordan’s south, where highlights include the ancient city of Petra and desert landscapes of Wadi Rum.
