WEEK Cook pilots are right to draw the line


Story: Thomas Cook Airlines pilots vote for strike action Thomas Cook pilots have taken a pay cut every year for the past five years and are paid on average 15% less than Tui and Virgin pilots. A pay rise of 1.5% is in effect a pay cut given inflation at 3.5%. Business-class travel was one of the things taken away from pilots five years ago. It’s only required on flights of more than seven hours and when positioning for work. Business-class travel when on company business – what’s wrong with that? Nobody wants to strike. It’s the last thing anyone wants, but you have to draw the line somewhere. Continuous erosion of pay and benefits has to stop. Fair play to the pilots and good on the union! BRIAN


Public-sector workers for the past seven years have effectively taken pay cuts as they get a 1% pay rise, well below inflation. As well as the company, strikes also affect the people wanting to fly. Please can pilots consider the effect that striking will have on destinations. Countries, particularly The Gambia, rely on the tourist season. NATHANYA DEAKIN
