Story: Brexit ‘impacting seasonal workers in travel’ You could have all these benefits by rejoining the EU – simple. Britain chose to walk away from EU membership so now must accept the consequences.

I can see a situation soon where the government allows working visas for EU citizens to fill gaps in the service sector. At the same time, young Brits can’t work abroad. What a result. Frank Houser

Hays: Prospect of profit Story: Hays Travel ‘back in profit’ this year, says co-founder Irene Hays (pictured) Carrie-anne Marks: That’s because they’ve saved on wages by losing lots of staff. Jane Handyside: Booked loads in the last couple of weeks with my local Hays Travel (Alnwick) – love the girls in there.

Dr Cheeky Chops @dr_cheeky Where do travel agents go on holiday? Bucharest.

Jet2: Forecast ‘flaw’ Story: Jet2 projects return to normal operations next summer Gary Noble: I can’t see how Jet2 works that out. They forget or ignore that at least 25% of people remain unvaccinated, and without these Covid passports that is 25% less sales.

The almighty row in regard to refunds was not very edifying and, indeed, is still ongoing. The travel trade’s call for help, admittedly fragmented, got lost in the noise of it all. Better PR would have helped, but that could be said for a lot of sectors. Lessons to be learnt? More diversity in all aspects of the travel world could do some good. And I will add my bugbear: when are we going to get a standalone outbound tourism minister? Patrick Doyle

The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Leadership: Sector needs new blood

Comment: Travel industry’s Covid response showed lack of broader business acumen I’ve said for years that by fishing in the same pool for talent the industry will fall victim to the law of diminishing returns, as well as confirmation bias. It’ll never evolve or be taken seriously without fresh blood, new ideas, different perspectives and cutting ties with the past. Phil Bloomfield

The travel industry needed a united front, but in reality some parts were actively knobbling other parts of the industry throughout. Jimbo

Leaving Vienna and heading home this evening, just before Austria heads back into full lockdown. Such a shame this beautiful country will once again be on hold.

David Speakman @DavidSpeakman1 Of course trust accounts could hamper start-ups – they would have to use their own capital rather than customer money. That’s the whole point!
