Wanted: fjords cruise for 100 disappointed dancers

Harry Kemble

A Hampshire agency that booked 100 line dancers on Independence of the Seas has appealed to cruise lines for help aſter Royal Caribbean International decided to reposition the ship. Ocean World Travel, in Eastleigh,

booked the Nuline Friends Line Dancing Cruises group on a Norwegian fords sailing, departing from Southampton on May 17, 2020. But earlier this month, Royal

Caribbean International announced it was cancelling Independence’s ex-UK season in 2020 to redeploy the ship in North America. Michele Dance, co-director of

Ocean World, said she “wanted to cry” when she heard the news. “We had all the space, the

music and dance floors booked [on Independence],” she said. “Now we are trying to get [the

dance group] on any cruise out of the UK to Norway, but it is such short notice.” Te dance group had booked

twice before with Ocean World Travel, sailing on Independence in 2017 and on MSC Cruises’ MSC Magnifica last year. Ocean World Travel is now trying

to rebook the group on a Norwegian Cruise Line or MSC sailing.

“We have had some of the group

call up asking for their money back,” Dance added. “We did have a nice big group, but it will not be the same now. It is very disappointing.” Dance implored lines to offer

support as she fears losing the booking unless she finds another suitable sailing.

Failed travel agency boss is banned from running a business

The boss of a failed travel agency has been banned from running a company for seven years following an Insolvency Service probe. Helen Jacobs set up ICharter Ltd in Chatham, Kent, in 2014. It went into liquidation last March with debts of £127,000. An investigation found Jacobs had failed to maintain accounts since December 2015.

6 23 MAY 2019 Royal has said that passengers

affected are entitled to a full refund and a ‘Future Cruise Credit’, valued at 25% of the fare paid for their cancelled sailing on Independence. Te line has also vowed to protect

agents’ commission. Dance added: “Royal Caribbean

has been very fair and we understand that they are protecting the commission.” She said the agency was due to receive between £7,000 and £8,000 in commission. Ocean World Travel had about

15 other bookings for Independence’s

ex-UK sailings next summer. › Cruise News, page 26

Tui unveils disability and accessibility training module

Tui is to roll out new disability awareness training to agents across its shop network as it reports a significant growth in bookings from clients with accessibility needs. Speaking at Abta’s Accessible

Travel and Tourism Seminar this month, Marina Snellenberg, Tui Group’s manager for people with reduced mobility and accessibility, said the number of bookings for this summer that included at least one customer with access requirements was up 130% on summer 2016. Tui’s new e-learning module

will cover disability awareness and possible holiday scenarios. It is designed to help Tui agents find accessibility information and book services such as airport assistance. It also aims to help agents

overcome confidence issues in selling to clients with accessible needs and follows a review of all Tui’s products with regards to their suitability for people with reduced mobility. “We have an ageing population

and disabilities are more prevalent,” said Snellenberg. “Agents are not medical experts.

We need to give them the tools to cater for our customers.” Tui is reviewing its hotels as to

whether they are suitable for clients with reduced mobility. So far, 300 of

3,500 have been categorised. › Accessible Travel Seminar, page 12
