Let failed airlines repatriate passengers
Comment: Monarch’s failure must sharpen minds over Atol Two points seem to me to be important here. First, the biggest risk today for the consumer is the failure of a major airline. While such a failure may before have been improbable, this can no longer be said to be the case. There are three major airlines operating from the UK that are at least 10 times the size of Monarch with much more complicated multinational features. Second, the repatriation of Monarch customers was aided by two factors: the timing of the failure and the availability of rescue aircraft. Now is surely the time to adopt some form of “administration under supervision” set-up that allows failed airlines to keep operating for a short period of time to deal with repatriations. This would be the most convenient, cheapest and quantifiable option and leave the refund for future bookings a straight matter of insurance. It may even make it more likely that a rescue package be found for the airline in the interests of creditors and competition. STEVEN TOMLINSON

Story: Wirral couple jailed for fake holiday sickness claim I have no sympathy for them. They knew exactly what they were doing. Everyone else ends up paying more for their holidays due to their selfishness.

Story: Grayling hints at regulatory reform after Monarch collapse The government chose to spend taxpayers’ money to bring home all passengers, not just those that were Atol-protected. Those passengers should have claimed from their travel insurance or from their card provider. Bailing everyone out irrespective sends out the wrong message about the personal responsibility of having the correct insurance cover for non-package holidays.
