Abta: Brits are taking more holidays but spending less

T

he number of Brits taking a holiday is the highest it has been since 2011, but consumers are spending less, according to new research from Abta.

Te Holiday Habits Report, unveiled at Te Travel

Convention in Tokyo, found nearly nine out of 10 Brits (88%) took a holiday in the 12 months to July 2019. Families with children aged over five fuelled the growth

with an average of 5.6 holidays a year – half in the UK and half overseas. Younger families, with children under five, took an average of 3.9 trips. Research shows foreign holidays saw an increase, with 64% of those polled having taken a holiday abroad, compared with 60% the year before. Te number of foreign holidays of seven nights or more

increased to an average of 1.1 per person, compared with 1 in 2018 and 0.7 in 2016. More than 50% of those travelling abroad took a package holiday, up from 49% last year. Many cited value for money as the reason. Te research showed that traditionally popular

destinations such as mainland Spain, the Canaries, Balearics, Greece and Italy remained among the favourites. Long-haul travel was also up, with a quarter of consumers saying they visited Asia, up from 15% in 2018. When it came to spend, the report found that

compared with two years ago, UK travellers were spending on average £98 less before and while away on a short overseas break and £94 less on a longer overseas break.

Mark Tanzer, Abta

Te survey found that one in five holidaymakers

had leſt it later to book their travels in the year to July – – something Abta members had also reported. When quizzed on future travel plans, seven out of 10

said they were planning a trip abroad in the next 12 months. While Europe topped the list of destinations people said they most wanted to visit (57%), the second most-popular choice was the UK at 56%. Tere was a slight dip in people voicing concern about the impact Brexit would have on holiday costs – down three points from last year to 51%. Abta chief executive Mark Tanzer said: “Rather than

cuting back on the number of holidays, people are looking to save money in other ways. With seven in 10 people planning a trip abroad in the year ahead, it’s clear that holidays are set to remain a spending priority.”

Young cruisers outpace market

Cruise bookings by 18-34-year-olds grew faster than any other age group in the 12 months to July. More than a quarter (28%) of 18-34-year-olds said

they had gone on a cruise – up six points on 2018 – outpacing a two-point rise to 38% among over-65s. Overall, one in 10 people said they had been on a

cruise in the past year, while about one in seven (14%) plan to go in the next 12 months, an increase of two percentage points on the same survey last year. A fiſth of 18-34-year-olds said they were keen to

try a wellness or foodie cruise. Shorter trips were more popular with younger travellers, with 33% of 18-34-year-olds interested in a three to five-day cruise.

Marrakech to host The Travel Convention in 2020

Abta revealed next year’s Travel Convention will be held in Marrakech, Morocco. Te event will be hosted by the Moroccan National Tourist Office and take place between
