Hurtigruten aims to run British Isles sailings in September

Travel Weekly reporters

Hurtigruten is in discussions with the UK government over plans to operate a series of short-break itineraries around the British Isles in September. The line confirmed talks were ongoing after the

Foreign Office updated its advice against all cruise travel last week. It also insisted its plans for the UK cruises were “underpinned by a flexible booking policy to reassure guests”, including a refund if sailings are cancelled. As Travel Weekly went to press, Hurtigruten was

planning to run eight reduced-capacity British Isles cruises from three UK ports. The hybrid battery-powered ship Roald Amundsen

will operate voyages to destinations in the UK and Ireland described as “remote and often inaccessible”. The first departure, from Portsmouth on September 2,

would make Hurtigruten the first line to operate a post-pandemic ex-UK sailing. Four six-day itineraries include Enchanting Islands and Coastal Towns, from Portsmouth to Liverpool, calling at the Isles of Scilly

capacity, with a reduced maximum of 350 passengers. Other planned departures are from Liverpool on September 7 and 17, and Glasgow on September 12. UK general manager Anthony Daniels said: “In

the planning of this short break series, comprehensive Outbreak Prevention Plans and Covid Response Plans were voluntarily submitted to port authorities and local destination stakeholders for scrutiny, and acceptance before launch. We are in discussions with the government over the return of expedition cruising for UK guests.” Hurtigruten previously announced it would debut in the UK with a year-round programme out of Dover from March 2021. hurtigruten.co.uk
