Atol protection should be optional
Story: CAA appoints new chief executive Atol regulation was the biggest setback to our industry. Yes of course we should offer comprehensive financial protection, but it should be an optional extra. When you spend £30,000 on a new car, the dealer doesn’t check your insurance, it’s up to you – buyer beware. The Civil Aviation Authority is not fit for purpose, and to sub-contract the Monarch fiasco to a third party claims company (at what cost?) is yet another disgrace. I have an ongoing claim for eight ladies who all paid me
£59 by cheque. They are now in the process of obtaining (at cost) their cleared cheques to substantiate their claim. My confirmation and copy receipts are worthless. The scheme is a disgrace.

Travelling with hand baggage is not so easy
At Gatwick, a traveller who has little luggage should have a relaxed and stress-free journey. But there are endless queues and constant checks of your boarding pass. Why? Then there is the one hand baggage- only rule, which everyone was complaining about. The attempt to generate a new revenue stream from extra bags is not working. EasyJet needs to study demand and charge in advance (say, first 50 bags free) or allow discretion. BOB MORRELL, managing director, Reality Training

Story: Universal Credit risk to holidaymakers After reading Gregson’s letter (Travel Weekly, November 30) I felt compelled to respond. Why do people on benefits believe they can skip interviews and job hunting to go on holiday? If they can afford a holiday, should they be receiving government pay? Benefits are to help with bills, housing and food, not luxuries like holidays, so it’s right that if you don’t stick to the rules, then you lose them [benefits].
