Kranjska Gora Tucked away in Slovenia’s northwest corner, this Alpine-feel resort is one of Slovenia’s most popular ski spots, topped with aquamarine lakes, verdant forests and timbered chalets. It’s also the home of the Planica Nordic Centre – which hosts an annual ski jumping World Cup and is home to more record jumps than anywhere else in the world – while summer brings hiking into the mix, with more than 100 miles of trails criss-crossing the pine-carpeted peaks.

But for those wanting to add an extra dose of adventure, suggest a paddleboarding trip along the river; Bananaway offers guided tours from €39, offering active types the chance to take in the city’s cobbled streets, castle and Plečnik-built architecture from a different angle.
