The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Test costs: Why not chop VAT? MAG: No invite
Story: Call for probe into ‘excessive’ Covid travel test costs I had a discussion about this last week with my MP, Robert Courts, who is the aviation and maritime minister. He gave us the usual Tory party line that competition among test suppliers was bringing prices down. I pointed out that last week’s Advertising Standards Authority report had condemned the government’s own website for being misleading, as many of the prices shown bore no relation to reality. I also said the simplest way to reduce prices would be to forgo the 20% VAT, which would bring the UK into line with the EU where governments have made tests VAT-exempt; however, being an avid Brexiteer, he replied that “the circumstances in the UK are different”! I would love to say that ‘you couldn’t make it up’. David Gambier
Katrina Smith @katrina_Travel Travel Counsellors Received a fabulous call yesterday from a prospective new client. Why had they contacted me? In their words “we want to support the travel industry and especially a local independent travel agent, not the internet” – thank you, thank you
Dom Carrick @domcarrick If Only Thank you to @MMTMan and the @MilesMorganNews team for an amazing afternoon at his alpaca farm. What a fabulous way to catch up with all of their brilliant team and our fellow operators after such a challenging time.
A Cheshire East local councillor has just asked us what we thought of Manchester airport’s new terminal, as he’d had an invitation to tour it. ‘I don’t know,’ I replied. ‘We agents haven’t been invited…’ Why is that, Manchester Airports Group? Why would you show local councillors around before travel agents? Have you forgotten that agents made the airport what it is today? Richard Slater, managing director,

Traffic lights: Axing amber would have consequences
Story: Leading agent calls for just red and green traffic light rules Arron Mitchell: I’m sorry but I disagree. I hate the traffic light system, but having just red and green would mean green could go to red at any time! At least with amber, people are warned and can take a risk. Helen Forshaw Davis: Also, if a country’s situation changes so restrictions are needed, give a two-week window for all British citizens to return home before enforcing quarantine on them.
