Sam Collins @1samc Ethos Travel Please can the media stop leading on airlines. Tourism contributes £106bn to the British economy. It supports 2.6 million jobs – of which only 341,000 are in the aviation industry. The media ignores the other 2.25m people.

Lockdown: Should be tighter

Story: Non-essential shops to close and furlough scheme extended David Pascoe: Boris didn’t go far enough yet again. He should have closed the borders and closed all business apart from food shops etc. Universities should have closed because they have caused a problem. People need to listen now, otherwise we are going to have a huge issue with holidays in 2021.

The best of your letters, comments and social media this week Industry: We must be united

Story: Plea for ‘travel guarantee fund’ as industry faces new shutdown The industry needs to work together far better. The media only sees aviation and an amorphous travel operator/agent group thing about which they have no real idea. As an industry we need to stop seeing the divisions between operator, retailer and aviation, and simply see a united industry – powerful, worth billions to the economy and importantly, employing millions of registered voters. Paul Bondsfield

Sarah Archer @justarcher03 Beachcomber Tours Today is a very sad day as many travel friends and colleagues lose their jobs through no fault of their own. Just remember that you may not work in the industry right now but A) you’ll be back and B) you’ll always be travel family, which means you never really left.

Heapy: Balance risks

Story: Jet2 and Tui call for pan-European travel protocols

By being Covid-obsessed, we’re causing damage elsewhere. Ever heard of the cure being worse than the disease? [Jet2holidays chief executive] Steve Heapy is right: a sensible coordinated approach is needed. The world goes about its business with a level of risk; you don’t shut down the roads because of road deaths, you just take sensible precautions and have rule sets. Nikki Louise

Becca Baldwin beccab98 Hays Travel (and Travel Weekly Young Leisure Agent of the Year 2018) Loved today! Happy Halloween!

Ban: Policies are a joke

Story: Government confirms travel ban as part of new lockdown restrictions Lyndsey Burgess: Absolute joke. What a mockery they are making of us in the travel industry. Who has our voice? No one has offered their support. There will be nothing left. I have no words. Just simply exhausted at this joke of a country and its policies.
