We need clarity before travel can take off A NOTE FROM THE EDITOR
Dnata chief John Bevan this week urged caution over national media headlines suggesting overseas holiday bookings were back with a bang following the government’s confirmation of plans for air bridges to loosen quarantine restrictions (page 4). Bevan suggested the stories should be taken “with a pinch of salt”, and the ongoing lack of clarity over the detail of the plans and related changes to FCO advice as Travel Weekly went to press was a clear indication that the brakes on recovery are still firmly on (pages 4 and 5). The renewed lockdown restrictions imposed in Leicester this week are
comparable to the government’s metaphorical ‘handbrake’ it can use to stop travel to destinations on its hotly anticipated ‘Covid travel list’. They are also a reminder that many barriers to travel remain closer
to home, and will no doubt have added to the concerns of some agents about restarting summer bookings when so much uncertainty remains (page 5). Ultimately, the proof will be in the pudding from mid-July when holiday flights resume in earnest and we can see tangible evidence of customers’ willingness to travel in the new reality. As I said in this column last week, the industry will welcome any sign of positive momentum in the weeks and months ahead, and the anticipated scope of the government’s list came as a pleasant surprise for many. Clarity remains vital and caution essential, but the opening of the hospitality sector at home this weekend and of destinations abroad from Monday mark an important step in the right direction.
