With striking wildlife, pristine beaches and lush rainforests, Tobago is a playground for families after a back-to-nature escape
In the Caribbean, good things come in small packages. Tobago measures just 25 miles by six, but these modest dimensions give shape to one of the most beautiful, untouched islands in the region – think powder-soft beaches, rampant green hills and unspoilt, crystal-clear bays. Tobago might ofiially be twinned with big sister Trinidad, but as a holiday destination it more than stands alone, and makes for something of an ideal family destination. This is partly down to the warmth of the locals. The islanders live life at a relaxed pace. Tobagonians know all about letting their hair down with beach parties and carnival celebrations, of course, but the prospect of long, slow hours in the sunshine is never far away. Fishing boats bob o shore, hummingbirds it between tropical plants and music drifts from under the palm trees. Heritage is taken seriously here.

Traditions are prized, whether in the form of calypso-soundtracked evenings and creole island dishes such as crab ’n’ dumpling, or through time-honoured festivities like February’s Bago Carnival and the annual Buccoo Goat & Crab Races – sure to thrill excitable little ones.
